MARK KOVATS Obituary

Mark Kovats, age 67, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family at the Toronto General Hospital on the evening of July 13, 2025. Predeceased by his parents, Andrzej (1990) and Maria (1989) Kovats, Mark leaves his son, Timothy; daughter, Maja; Maja's partner, Tristan Bowie; and granddaughters, Mila and Elsie. He also leaves his immediate extended family: Timothy and Maja's mother, Anne-Marie Burrus; brother, Andy, and sister-in-law, Jannet Kovats; niece, Laura Worsley; sisters, Joanna Kovats and Dorothy Hatt; Dorothy's partner, Kendall Miller; and niece and nephew, Lyla and Robbie Hatt. Mark was born in 1958 in Montreal and after getting his BA, BSc, and MBA, he launched his accounting career specializing in smaller, not-for-profit corporations and charities, where he was instrumental in taking care of their finances so that they could focus on their charitable causes. He was an intellectual and was able to converse knowledgeably about virtually any subject. He loved reading history and was the captain of his weekly trivia team. Mark enjoyed watching all sports from tennis and hockey to test cricket. His unique hobby building models of eighteenth-century ships would fascinate anyone who had the privilege of seeing them. His infectious smile upon greeting you was well known to all. Above all, he enjoyed spending time with his beautiful granddaughters, who were the apple of his eye! Charity donations in Mark's name can be made to the Mt. Sinai Palliative Care Unit at: https://secure.supportsinai.ca/site/SPageServer/?pagename=donate_today.html

I first met Mark when I joined the board of the Jane/Finch Community and Family Centre. For 10 years I got to speak with Mark and work with him to help the board and the community understand the financial picture of the Centre. I would run into Mark at other organizations and at York University. Mark always had nice things to say and showed me his sunny disposition. Jane-Finch, the people he worked with, and the broader Toronto community will miss this lovely man.

It was an absolute pleasure working with Mark at the Jane/Finch Centre. On the days he was at the Centre, he readily made himself available to any staff who had financial questions and to staff who just wanted to chat for a bit. He was calming, intelligent, empathic and a whole lot more! Condolences to your family and may Mark rest in peace.
