MARLENE CHAMPION Obituary
(November 3, 1934 – July 23, 2025) It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Marlene (née Goulding) due to complications from a fall. Predeceased by her adoring husband, Gordon; and her brother, Geoffrey Bond, Marlene leaves behind her two sons, Robert and Mark; daughters-in-law, Kathryn and Debbie; and her five treasured grandchildren, Nigel, Franny, Drew, Rachelle, and Brett. Marlene trained as a nurse, and it was while working at The Rampton Hospital (Nottinghamshire, UK) that she met Gordon, who encouraged her to "try out" life in Canada to see if she liked it. She did - and together they built a wonderful life in Toronto for over 60 years, raising their sons and creating a network of treasured lifelong friendships. Marlene was Gordon's perfect match - always up for an adventure and happy to tag along on a tour of a diesel engine! With both of their families based in England, they travelled often to the UK, and Gordon's work and pleasure travel in later years took them around the world. In turn, they were generous and welcoming hosts whenever international friends or relatives came to visit. Marlene was a gifted artist, beginning her painting journey as a young mother and remaining dedicated to her weekly art group well into her 80s. Over the years, she sold many paintings, and our family takes great comfort in knowing that her legacy lives on in the many homes where her artwork continues to be enjoyed. Her creativity also blossomed in her love of gardening - she cultivated an oasis of colour and light, often painting the very flowers she so lovingly grew. Marlene often expressed how fortunate she felt that both of her sons had remained in Toronto - in fact, within the same neighbourhood - allowing her to see them and their families often. She especially loved the unexpected and casual visits: a quick swim, a cup of tea, or foraging for raspberries. She loved her grandchildren deeply, and this proximity allowed her to nurture uniquely special relationships with each of them. Marlene will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered always. A private family gathering will be held to celebrate Marlene's life. If you wish to honour Marlene's memory with a charitable donation, please consider supporting The Palliative Care Unit at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.
