Martha GOMBITA Obituary

MARTHA EUGENIA GOMBITA (née Kambeitz) Died peacefully, at Union Villa LTC, on January 1, 2024, at the age of 92. Martha was born December 16, 1931, in Sedley, Saskatchewan, into a (rural) large, loving and devout family, but at a young age moved to Toronto for university studies, and then an enriching 30-year career focused on primary education. In the 1970s, this included authoring several of Ginn and Company's (very effective and popular) Starting Points in Language Arts 'Mr. Mugs' readers. In 1983, 'Mrs. Mugs' married Michael, which was a loving and devoted union until his death in 2003. Martha will be greatly missed by her stepchildren, Carol (Doug) Wolfe, Susan (Mark) Drury, Judy Gombita and Michael Gombita. Likewise, grandchildren, Darcy (Sonya), Jeremy, Sarah (Chris), Jacqueline (Jordan) and Alec (Nela), mourn the loss of their loving Nana. Martha was predeceased by her parents, Valentine Kambeitz and Kenda Leier; and siblings, Sr. Hilda, Leo (Johanna), Sr. Georgina, Anthony (Katherine), Anselm (Annie), Louise (Jake), Margaretta, Martin, Clemens (Dawn), Sr. Rose and Pius (Gladys). The family invites relatives and friends to Chapel Ridge Funeral Home, 8911 Woodbine Ave., Markham (905-305-8508), on Tuesday, January 9th from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass is scheduled at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 10th at St. Justin Martyr Church, 3898 Highway 7, just east of Warden Ave. Online condolences or a donation in memory of Martha Gombita to the Unionville Home Society Foundation may be made via the Chapel Ridge Funeral Home.

Martha and Michael were members of set. Patricks Bridge Club. We looked forward to lively conversation and challenging bridge games. Martha always spoke lovingly of their Family and her Parents and Siblings. A lovely lady showing inspiration to so many. She certainly loved to entertain others. Our condolences to the whole Family

I'm 44 years old and coincidently thought about my grade 1 teacher, Mrs. Gombita, who taught at St. Rene Goupil in Scarborough. I remember she retired shortly after I had her as a teacher (probably around 1990?). I am sadden to hear about her passing and very coincidental it was so recent. Some teachers stick out in your memory and Mrs. Gombita was one of them. Firm, fair and instilled discipline that is important in early childhood educators. My condolences to the family. Rest assured she made a difference in the kids she taught and her efforts were well worth it that hold a piece of her teaching legacy.
