Martin JONES Obituary
JONES, Martin Cunnick
P.Eng, FCSCE, O.N.
On April 6th, 2015, Martin Jones passed away in the care of West Oak Village in Oakville. His wife Jennifer had recently passed away in January 2015. He is survived by his four children and their families, Russell (Dolores), Clare (Grant), Neil (Tanya) and Andrew (Filiz), and 9 grandchildren, all of whom he loved dearly. Martin lived a rich and rewarding life. Born August 5th, 1934 in Peterborough, England and raised in Essex, he became a top athlete in 400m running competitions. He graduated from Chigwell School and then the University of London (Queen Mary College), where he graduated as a civil engineer.
He and his family emigrated to Canada in 1969. Martin worked for Wimpey Canada, upon his arrival. In 1971, he moved to Cementation Canada Ltd., where he progressed to Vice President. In 1986, Martin branched out and opened his own firm, Groundation Engineering Contractors and worked across Canada providing his specialized expertise, from Yellowknife to James Bay, Ungava Bay and many other remote areas of northern Ontario. As well, he supplied this expertise to many jobs in the Toronto and Ottawa areas, such as the Hockey Hall of Fame, CN Tower, Parliament Building tunnels, and bridges, to name a few. From 1991-92, Martin became President of the Canadian Society of Civil Engineers. When Martin retired, he dedicated much of his time to his church, St. Hilda's, in Oakville. He enjoyed helping individuals in need by delivering food supplies to the less fortunate, and volunteered his time to meet with troubled youth. He was the recipient of the Order of Niagara.
More recently, Martin had battled with Alzheimer's for the past 5 years.
'We should remember that it is not we that have created the earth on which we build our structures but God, who also created us. I believe, as and when we listen to Him, we will be able to build out structures and more importantly our lives on a firm foundation.'
Martin Cunnick Jones A Life Celebration will take place on May 30th at 11 a.m. at Knights of Columbus Hall, 1494 Wallace Road, Oakville. In lieu of flowers, if desired, please consider a memorial donation in Martin's memory to the Alzheimer Society of Ontario.
