MARY ARMSTRONG Obituary

(September 10, 1938 – April 22, 2025) Marriage and trauma therapist, yoga teacher, author. Mary Katherine Armstrong died peacefully, on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, in Kingston, after a determined battle against vascular dementia. A pioneering psychotherapist and Focusing expert, a longtime yoga teacher, and the author of Confessions of a Trauma Therapist, Mary was a wise and loving mother to Frank Armstrong. She also leaves behind her granddaughter, Abigail Armstrong; her daughter-in-law, Julie Smith; and her older sister, Diane Baldwin. The daughter of Margaret Dorothy Hunter (Henning) and Alan Francis Hunter, Mary was predeceased by her husband and friend of 55 years, Harvey Alexander Armstrong (separated). Because Mary obtained a medically assisted death, she was able to plan and attend her own celebration of life on April 21st. She transitioned into the light at Frank and Julie's home with Frank, Julie, and Abi at her side. As per Mary's wishes, there will be no funeral; if you wish to honour her in another way, please donate to Dying with Dignity Canada. I send my sympathy to you, Frank, Julie, Abigail, and Diane on the passing of your beloved Mary. As you know, she leaves a big gap because of her many contributions - not just to her family and friends but to the wider world of physical and emotional health, especially through her teaching and guidance in yoga, EMDR, and Focusing. I am grateful to Mary for all I learned from her and I still treasure Focusing. I am also grateful because she and Harvey played a significant role in keeping us five in the Italian Group together. We had delicious dinners, good conversations and lots of laughter. Our bond was special and forever memorable. Heartfelt thanks, Mary. Miss you and bless you. Hugs, Diane

A Tribute to My Dear Friend, Mentor, Guru, and Soul Sister, Mary K. Armstrong

There are people who walk into our lives and, from the very beginning, leave footprints not just on our paths but deep within our hearts. Mary was one of those rare souls - a dear friend, a mentor whose wisdom has guided me, a guru whose light has illuminated even my darkest moments, and a soul sister whose presence feels like home.

Thank you Mary, for being my guiding star, my teacher, my friend, my soul sister and most of all, thank you for loving me. I am forever better because of you.

Love, Victoria

How do I capture Mary, my gentle saviour, my dearest friend. I first met her at a Focusing retreat she was offering. Focusing changed my life that weekend , and she subsequently saved my life as my therapist, after a devastating nervous breakdown. Later I became a Focusing Trainer and a Certified Focusing Teacher under her careful tutelage. Next I became a colleague, including involvement in organizing an International Focusing Conference at Kempenfelt Bay. Mary was our patron. Later I became a travelling companion. Together with Sammy the poodle we two elderly ladies drove to Arizona and back. Then a joining in San Miguel de Allende. Trip to Greece and Rome. Two 75 and 80 yr. old ladies climbing to the top of the Acropolis. Incredible experience. Holiday in Cuba. All the time Focusing together.
Her kindness and gentleness and capacity for listening was beyond measure.
I was in FaceTime contact with her on a weekly basis. Together with my Focusing friend and colleague Nancy I went to see her 2 weeks before the end. She was at peace.
I was so blessed she came into my life. She also connected me with so many others who brought such authentic relationships into my life. I will miss her dearly. We all will.

Mary was truly a pioneer in many ways but most importantly, she was a loving, caring and compassionate human. She made you feel like you were the only person in the room when she spoke to you and her beautiful blue eyes seemed to gaze into your soul. She was loved and respected by many and choosing her time to leave this earth on her terms, with grace, was an act of love until the very end. She will be greatly missed by her family and all who knew her.
