A Tribute to Dr. Mary Chipman: A Remarkable Mentor, Scholar, and Human Being

When I arrived in Canada in 2003 after completing my postdoctoral research in Japan, I had the immense privilege of joining the University of British Columbia (UBC). It was here that I encountered two extraordinary mentors who would shape the trajectory of my academic and professional life: Dr. Parminder Raina and Dr. Mary Chipman.

Dr. Chipman was more than a mentor-she became like a second mother to me. Her kindness, humility, and unwavering dedication to her students and the field of biostatistics left an indelible mark on my heart. She not only taught me biostatistics from A to Z, but she also instilled in me a deep understanding of how to apply statistical thinking with common sense to solve real-world problems in epidemiology and public health.

Dr. Chipman always encouraged me to present my research at academic conferences, emphasizing the importance of receiving critical feedback and transforming that into rigorous publications. Her approach was methodical yet compassionate, always grounded in excellence and integrity.

What stood out most was her unshakable dedication. Her sharp intellect, laser-like focus, and unwavering commitment to public health research were inspiring beyond words. Even in her later years, she never missed an academic conference. I would often see her there-still curious, still encouraging, and still extending her warm, welcoming hand, offering thoughtful reflections on my work.

Canada´s scientific landscape is richer because of towering figures like Dr. Mary Chipman. Her legacy lives on through the countless students and colleagues she mentored, the rigorous research she championed, and the human kindness she extended so freely. I am going to miss her deeply. We have lost not only a brilliant biostatistician but also one of the great hearts of Canadian public health.

Thank you, Dr. Chipman. I carry your wisdom, your example, and your warmth with me always.
