Mary ENSOR Obituary
MARY ISOBEL ENSOR (née Clemes) It is with heavy hearts that we share the news that Mary passed away peacefully at her home at Amica Bayview Gardens, Toronto, Ontario on Wednesday, June 1, 2022. Mary was born in Toronto on April 23, 1926. She was the proud daughter of Margaret Lennox (Burritt) and Gawn Edwy Clemes. Mary lost her sweet baby sister, Shirley Margaret Clemes (1931-1934), at a very young age but kept her picture on her bedroom wall throughout her life. Mary married her beloved husband, John Douglas Ensor (1926-2003) in October 1952. She was a wonderfully caring and devoted mother to Robert Ensor (Tania), Kathryn Baranowski (Roger, 1953 - 2010), and Patricia Ensor, and loving, doting Nana to Joshua (1993-2020), Alexandra, Zachary, and Matthew. Growing up in Moore Park, Mary attended Whitney School, Havergal 'Ladies' College, and Victoria College at University of Toronto, where she was a very proud member of the AOII fraternity. Mary went on to work as a librarian at the U of T Library prior to marrying John and starting a family. John's work transferred the family to London, Ontario in 1963 for ten years. During this time, Mary was an active volunteer on the board of the Merrymount Children's Home, and was President of the May Court Club of London. She then followed in her father's footsteps and became a very successful real estate agent with Royal LePage for two decades, before retiring to spend more time with her children and grandchildren, and volunteering with the Bayview Village Association and the Havergal College Old Girl's Association where she served as President. Mary loved to travel, planning special family trips to the Bahamas, the Maritimes, Barbados and Florida, cruising the Caribbean several times, exploring icebergs in Alaska, volcanoes in Hawaii, and enjoying her final cruise through Canada/New England on the Queen Mary II. For many years, she and John enjoyed the comforts of Siesta Key, Florida with dear old family friends in the winter months. Her last crazy adventure was to experience the thrill of the EdgeWalk at the CN Tower to celebrate her 90th birthday. She was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching tennis, golf and baseball, but getting out to the hockey arena to watch her grandson, Matthew as goaltender gave her the most joy and just four short weeks before her passing, she attended a Blue Jays game with him to celebrate Mother's Day. Mary has been fondly remembered this week by family and friends as a remarkable and wise woman, full of energy and spunk, always positive, with a great smile and a sparkle in her eye. She was incredibly kind, supportive and generous, with a sense of fun. Always a giver and interested in others, she made everyone feel welcome in her home. As an old friend said when he heard the news of her passing, 'If ever there was a woman who could be described as having had a 'life well lived', it was Mary!' The family would like to thank everyone at Amica Bayview Gardens for making Amica a place Mary was happy to call home for the last 7 years. Mary made many wonderful friendships there over the years, not only with the residents, but also with the wonderful Amica and VHA staff. The care Mary received when she needed it most was outstanding and truly special. We would also like to extend a warm thank you to her devoted and dear friend Ana and to Adelia (Adel) for her friendship and incredible care and assistance right to the very end. A funeral service will be held at St. John's York Mills Anglican Church, 19 Don Ridge Drive, North York, on Tuesday, June 21, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. followed by a reception at the church. All friends and family are welcome. An interment will follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Donations in memory of Mary may be made to Havergal College, Sick Kids Hospital, the Daily Bread Food Bank or a charity of your choice.
