Mary GILLESPIE Obituary

MARY ADELE GILLESPIE February 8, 1920 - December 6, 2022 Adele lived an independent, full life, with good humour, grounded in faith. She had high expectations of herself, and compassion for those around her. Adele was born in Toronto, graduated from the Loretto College School and the University of Toronto, and worked at the North American Life Assurance Company until her retirement. Adele was an avid golfer, and a life member of the Scarborough Golf Club. She spent many happy winter vacations with friends playing golf on Sanibel Island, Florida. Adele was generous with her time and care for her friends and many cousins. She had a quick wit and loved to laugh. Adele enjoyed music and mystery novels and had a keen interest in current affairs. She started her day with the Globe and Mail opinion pages and crossword puzzle until after her 100th birthday. When she turned 90, Adele retired her golf clubs and moved to the Russell Hill Retirement Residence, where she found a group of good friends who shared a dinner table, bridge games, movies, outings to concerts, and, eventually, 100th birthday parties. Adele was predeceased by her parents, Edith and George Gillespie of Toronto; her brothers, George and Howard Gillespie; her nephew, George Gillespie; and her cousins, Joan and Claire Snetsinger, and Tony Wells. The family wishes to extend their thanks to the staff and personal support workers at the Russell Hill Retirement Residence for their respectful, loving care for Adele. A Funeral Mass will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, December 13, 2022 at Holy Rosary Parish 354, St. Clair Avenue, W., followed by burial at Mount Hope Catholic Cemetery. www.Rosar-Morrison.com.

Edmund Bruton

December 13, 2022

I think our mother, Kathleen Joan O'Sullivan (Joan Bruton), would want us to add a few words out of respect for her great friendship with Adele Gillespie.

Mom and Adele went to Loretto Abbey together from grade 1 to grade 13. I think they may even have lived on the same street in Toronto - Brunswick Avenue. They were the best of friends and Mom always had a special place in her heart for Adele.

Mom married our father, Patrick Bruton, when she was 30 and promptly proceeded to have four children (including twins) in four years.

Adele would often come by the house to visit Mom. She was always so lovely, beautifully dressed, not a hair out of place and I'm pretty sure she always wore lipstick. Mom, by comparison, was just managing to hold things together. Adele always seemed to arrive and leave in a state of shock. The look on her face, so vividly perceived by the children, was clear, "Oh dear, Joan, what have you done?"

I don't ever recall visiting Adele's house. I'm sure she could only take so much of the madness.

Adele was Mom's best childhood friend. Something like that never changes and the depth of their friendship made an indelible impression on all the Bruton children.

We offer our friendship and condolences to the Gillespie family.
