MARY SMITH Obituary

(nee Thornton) Mary Lee peacefully slipped away in Halifax, on March 6, 2026, surrounded by family. She leaves her son, Christopher (Lydia Bugden); daughter in-law, Wendy Smith (Ian Lambert); beloved grandchildren, Tyler, William, Sydney, and Maggie; her sister, Anne Jukes Hughes; and sister-in-law, Eve Wickwire. She was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Col. Harky Smith (2017); her elder son, Gordon (2015); sister, Jane Strathy (2018); brother, Thomas (2016); and her parents, Thomas Alexander Thornton and Edith Eleanor Ellis. Born November 2, 1938, the third of four children, Mary Lee was raised in Toronto. She attended Bishop Strachan School and trained at Women's College Hospital, becoming a Registered Nurse. While attending a wedding in Quebec City in 1960, she caught the attention of a young military officer who quickly decided he had met the woman he would marry. Harky's determined pursuit of "Lovee" eventually won her over, beginning a 55-year adventure together across Canada and in Europe. They formed deep and lasting friendships within the military community, though Mary Lee never hesitated to challenge the label of "dependent wife." Together they raised two energetic boys, instilling in them a strong sense of family, community, and love of Canada. After settling in Ottawa in 1978, Mary Lee became a dedicated community volunteer. She contributed many years to organizations including the IODE, Christ Church Cathedral, and the Civic Hospital pastoral care team. She was especially proud of leading the advancement and legacy of the Elizabeth Residence following a devastating fire, a project that strengthened her confidence as a leader and organizer. In recognition of her many contributions, she received an Ottawa civic leadership award in 2020. Mary Lee had exquisite taste and a rare ability to share it – whether in the graceful way she tied one of her beloved scarves, a beautifully set table adorned with fine china, antique pressed glass, and sterling serving pieces, or an artfully arranged bouquet from her garden. She took quiet pleasure in caring for family heirlooms and collecting pine furniture and folk art, creating homes, both in the city and at the family cottage, which were warm, welcoming, and unmistakably her own. Nowhere was this gift more evident than in the meals she prepared. She delighted in choosing menus, pairing dishes thoughtfully, and timing each course so everything came together effortlessly. For Mary Lee, a meal was never simply food but an expression of hospitality, creativity, and affection for those gathered around her table. She also found pleasure in choosing the perfect gift for any occasion. Mary Lee formed close relationships with both of her daughters-in-law and loving bonds with each of her grandchildren, who valued her guidance and example. She took particular joy in their adventures at the cottage, Tyler and Sydney's performances in the theatre, and William and Maggie's athletic competitions. Though she believed in doing things properly, Mary Lee took great care never to upset or mistreat anyone. She rarely complained and was known for a dry wit that often caught people by surprise. Diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2017, she maintained her independence until 2023, when she moved to Halifax to be closer to Christopher, Lydia, and Eve. At Parkland at the Gardens, she quickly formed new friendships and came to cherish the warmth and kindness of that community. She was grateful for the care of Dimitra at Kachan Physiotherapy and the compassion of the Parkwood Home Care team, especially Hannah and Chinchu. Mary Lee lived a full and generous life enriched by deep friendships and devoted family. In her final days, many reached out to tell her how much her kindness, hospitality, and friendship had meant to them. She leaves behind a legacy of warmth, grace, and gatherings made special simply because she was there. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Mary Lee's life will be held in Ottawa later this spring. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada, Parkinson Canada, or Christ Church Cathedral, Ottawa.
