I am saddened to read about the passing of MJ last summer. I last saw her at Hemingways where we shared a Christmas night dinner on December 25, 2019. Then Covid hit a few months later and while we spoke on the phone, we didn´t connect again. I did not know that she was ill.
I met MJ through Marg Sedlack another advertising friend who has left us. Very few of us are left from the fun filled days of advertising in Toronto in the 1970s and 80s.

Mary Jane was one of my oldest and closest friends. I first met her in the late
60s through mutual friends and relatives in the advertising world. My own pursuits in those days included motherhood, higher education and social activism. But our mutual passion for political discussions eventually bonded us right up until her final weeks. Over the years we shared many interests and fun times - sailing at the RCYC, attending Saturday afternoons at the Opera, dinner parties (always with Chablis and Cotes du Rhone wines), and good conversation. I will miss her!

Mary Jane Speers, my best friend of 50 years, passed away July 6. She was diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer back in December 2022. She has been a witness to my life since I was 23 and her departure leaves a huge space in my life.
I always spoke with MJ several times a week and that contact increased to almost daily since December 2022. Our phone conversations were more like visits, lasting at least an hour but more often, several hours. We talked about politics, world events, social change, family and friends and always a lot of laughter.
She loved near-northern Ontario. Her beloved Father had a home in North Bay on Trout Lake and that was home to her.
A patron of the arts and legendary drinking holes in Toronto; the lights should be dimmed in her honour at Jimmy McVeigh's New Windsor House and at the Canadian Opera Company, Art Gallery of Ontario, Royal Ontario Museum, the Toronto Symphony, TVO and PBS.
I miss her terribly.
(Debbie King, you can reach me at [email protected] MJ had a couple of young people who worked with her at Ronalds that should know about her passing. I think the names were Susan and Ron or Tim? Not sure. )

I first met MJ as a colleague in late 70s. She became a good friend as we shared a passion for travel and politics and had many spirited conversations over a good glass (or more) of red wine. My condolences to the family.

Mary Jane and I were close - we worked together at Ronalds-
Reynolds and kept in touch for many years after. I was disheartened to hear that she had passed. I will miss her.

Mary Jane and I started as colleagues in advertising in the 70s but became close friends. During covid she didn't want to venture out, so we only spoke on the phone and even though her friends got together after covid, she still wasn't comfortable venturing out. I had no idea that she was ill and I'm sorry we didn't mange to touch base more often. We shared a love of travel and politics and always enjoyed these discussions with a good glass (or more) of red wine. If there is a future celebration of life, I would love to be notified. My sincere condolences to the family.

MJ and I worked together for a couple of years at the ad agency. She was responsible for recommending me for
the position of account executive. Two years after joining the company I opened the Montreal office and
worked with our clients in both cities. Seven years later
I started my own company . Thank you MJ for your support and most memorable times in the crazy world
of advertising. Your will be remembered for your steady influence during the day-to-day craziness of the business. You always made my day! With fond memories R.S.[Ron] Adams CAAP.
