Mary TIGERT Obituary

MARY LOUISE TIGERT 1945-2023 Peacefully at home in Toronto on June 22nd, in her 77th year. Cherished wife of the late Lance Tigert; beloved mom of Blaine and his wife Jo Anne, Bryce and his wife Helena; proud grandma of Lauren, Ayden, Leah and Sophie; daughter of the late Margaret E. (Lowe) and William J. Guest; sister of Douglas and Barbara. Mary Lou deeply loved her family and was very proud of them. While family and home were her focus, she also pursued varied careers, initially teaching high school Geography with the Toronto District School Board, and then a career in Human Resources. Over the years she has been an active member and volunteer at LPCC, most recently as Chair of the Flower Committee; a past member of Victoria University's Board of Regents (University of Toronto); past Co-Chair of the Canada Blooms Board; and other community service. Sports have always played an integral role in the Tigert family life – hockey, alpine skiing, tennis, squash and later golf and badminton. Lance introduced Mary Lou to world travel, and it was a passion for them both – highlighted by South America, Asia and Africa. After Lance's untimely passing in 2005, Mary Lou continued exploring less visited parts of the world with small group adventure travel to SE Asia and Africa plus trips planned with friends to Europe and other destinations. Mary Lou would say that her travel life was amazing – there are too many destinations name. Mary Lou says she has been spoiled having both her sons' families living nearby plus cherished family time shared at our cottage on Lake of Bays to enjoy a wealth of happy memories, especially experiencing her granddaughters developing into fine young women. She valued her many friendships. Conversations with life-long friends, glasses of wine at the cottage, her badminton group zooms, online bridge with her long-time bridge group and online euchre with Garden Club friends ensured stimulation and friendship during Covid. In 2005, she joined the Garden Club of Toronto which opened the door to a positive, creative experience designing with flowers and developing her love of gardening. Mary Lou asked us to share how blessed she felt for the caring support of her loving family and her dear friends who enabled her to live life to the full with fun and affection after diagnosis. We also thank Dr. S. Perera and the staff at the Odette Cancer Centre, and the Wellspring support group. Funeral will be held at Lawrence Park Community Church (2180 Bayview Ave, North York, ON), at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 29th. Reception to follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Mary Lou's memory to Wellspring Cancer Support.

On Thursday, I attended the funeral of my dear friend of 69 years and was inspired and in awe as I listened to the list of her achievements. Mary Lou was accomplished in everything she did but most of all, never did she brag. She was courageous and brave despite her illness. I will miss her and am forever blessed to have had her in my life.

I met Mary Lou through the Oasis Cancer support group at Wellspring. I will always remember her dry sense of humour and love for her family. She was so happy that she took a trip with 'her boys'. May her memory always be a blessing.

I didn't know MaryLou that well, but I know that she loved her family and friends. She welcomed me into the family as Kent's wife and I will be forever grateful for that. I'm sure Kent and Lance have met her at the Golden gates and they are together again.

My great sympathy to Many Lou and Lance´s family and all of the friends who held her dear. I worked with Mary Lou over 30 years ago when she first launched her second career in HR. I was too young then to recognize how big a step it was to become a learner but I surely do remember the grace and humility this highly accomplished woman carried herself and embraced the challenge. It is no surprise to me that she managed her illness with courage and a never ending zest for the here and now. She was enormously proud of her family back then and even more so, if that´s possible when we exchanged warm emails last winter. May she rest in peace knowing she left the earth better than she found it.

When I was eight years old the Guest family moved into my neighborhood and I made a wonderful new friend. Through the years we shared many great times together. We both had October birthdays and over the years we would celebrate together over lunch and a glass of wine. We talked about our hopes and dreams, our families, our wonderful husbands and our children and grandchildren. This year I will celebrate alone but will raise a glass of wine to Mary Lou. I was lucky enough to speak to her the night before she passed and was able to tell her I loved her and she responded the same to me. I will always treasure her and our remarkable friendship. To Blaine, Bryce and all her family Jim and I want you to know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. RIP my friend. I will miss you so very much.
