MATTHEW "MATT" MAHER obituary

MATTHEW MAHER Obituary

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of Matthew "Matt" Maher, which occurred on December 7, 2025. He departed this life at the age of 88, at his home in Toronto. He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Dr. Bertha Gardner-Maher; his cherished children, Matthew, Jonathan (Florence Colombani), Jean-Philippe, Catherine and Aidan (Whitney MacDonald); and his adored grandchildren, Matthieu, Maeve, Gabriel, Bennett and Rose. He will also be deeply missed by his sisters, Ursula (the late Barry Clare) and Moya (Wayne Betteridge); his brothers, Aidan (Carol Ignatz), Paul (the late Josephine Hann) and Laurence (Betty Sheomangal); as well as nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his dear sister, Monica; brother, Frank; and his other siblings from Ireland. His memory will also be cherished by members of the Gardner family and a wide circle of friends, colleagues and extended family. The Maher family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Dr. Sandra Black, Dr. Yasemin Ikizler and Dr. Jessica Zive; and to the wonderful caregivers whose unwavering dedication and support made it possible for Matt to stay in his home until the end. A private gathering of family will be held to honour his memory. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be conveyed through a donation to the Brain Canada Foundation or an organization of your choice.
