MAVIS BOWMAN Obituary

(nee Sloat, December 6, 1930 – January 11, 2026) Mavis Bowman died peacefully, surrounded by family, on Sunday, January 11th, a month after celebrating her 95th birthday. Mavis was in remarkable good health until her early 90s, when congestive heart failure began to curtail her energy and mobility. Undaunted, she lived in the same house in the Wexford area of Scarborough, Ontario, from 1963 until she turned 93 in 2023, living alone after Wilfred, her husband of 63 years, died in 2016. Alone, but not lonely, Mavis always kept in touch with her large and extended family and maintained a wide circle of friends, bridge partners and Avon customers. The family is particularly grateful to the friends in the neighborhood who kept in close touch with Mavis while she lived alone. At 93, Mavis began a new chapter when she moved to Presentation Manor and found a retirement community of friends and staff with whom she shared many happy times. The family also express our deep gratitude to the staff and community at Presentation Manor for their friendship and care of Mavis as her physical needs slowly increased. Mavis was the third of nine children born to Lloyd and Edna Sloat on their farm in Keswick Ridge, New Brunswick. During snowstorms, she was taken to church in a horse-drawn sleigh so that the parishioners had someone to play the organ during the hymns. As a young woman she moved to Ottawa, where she met Wilf. He spent his career working for The Bank of Nova Scotia, and it was the bank that transferred him to Toronto where they settled permanently and raised their family. Mavis leaves her three children, Stephen (Elizabeth Koester), David (Sharon) and Susan (Michael Miller); seven grandchildren, Jessica (Danielle Stanley), Michael (Jasmine Bruce), Jameson (Elaine Hoey), Callie, Peter (Paula Hepburn), Randall Miller and Jackson; and the star of any show in which he appears, great-grandson, Wyatt. A celebration of Mavis's long and happy life will take place in the spring. Private interment at Pine Hills Cemetery, Scarborough. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or Michael Garron Hospital.

Stephen, David, Susan and extended family:

I was sad to hear of your mom´s passing and I´m very sorry for your loss. Your mom and dad were incredibly generous and loving people that I remember fondly. I used to loving going for visits for a swim in the pool and a bbq, or to visit Rufus the cat while my mom picked up her latest order from the greatest Avon lady who ever lived.

She lived a good long life which means your tears will soon be replaced with a lifetime of laughs and love as you cherish her in your memories.

With love,

Michael Falle

Mavis was my neighbor, I valued a friend, and I called her, my adopted mom. I live three houses from Mavis for 25 years. She was a big part of my life. I am so thankful I spent a couple of hours with her between Christmas and New Year´s 2025. We had a wonderful conversation, laughs, and lots of hugs. She probably showed me the pictures of her great grandson and talked about the family Christmas she had hosted. I missed Wilf and I will miss Mavis terribly.
