Mavis YOUNG Obituary
Passed away peacefully, with family at her side, after a hard fought battle with cancer. She leaves behind many family and friends, notably her three children and three grandchildren, whose joyful presence illuminated her final years. Mavis enjoyed a long career in medical research. She began work in her 20s with the WHO in both Switzerland and Brazil, spent many years in immunology at the Jewish General Hospital, transitioned to HIV research at the McGill University Health Centre, then finally (and reluctantly) retired from her position at Health Canada in Ottawa. Mavis' dedication to community and civic involvement was unmatched. Heavily involved in local politics, she fought to preserve parks and green spaces in her beloved home of Westmount. An avid reader, adventurous cook and world traveler, Mavis will be missed by her friends at the garden, the book club, a variety of community associations and the many many friends she has collected over the years. She will be remembered for her amazing breadth of knowledge, her generosity, iron will, and dry English humour. In honour of what would have been her 82nd birthday on April 19th, the family will be hosting a joyful celebration of her life at her home on Melville Ave. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation of remembrance to a humanitarian or environmental charity.
