MEL SHELLEY Obituary

Born May 17, 1932, in Kelowna, BC, to Grace Foulds, and passing peacefully in Burnaby on October 24, 2025 (93), we mourn the loss of our beloved father and family patriarch, Mel Shelley. A UBC Civil Engineering graduate (1955, B.A.Sc., P.Eng.) and UBC's first M.B.A. graduate (1957), it was there Mel met his wife, Mary Ann; they married in 1954, sharing 60 years together. Mel gave decades to public service, including a generation at the City of Burnaby, with decades more consulting through MJS & Associates and Urban Systems. A Master Mason at 25 and lifelong Rotarian, he devoted countless hours to community service. Teaching and advising widely, he never truly retired. Mel led by quiet example, valuing integrity, relationships, and good humour. He was kind, selfless, and humble. He taught us to do it right, do it well, and have fun along the way. Survived by sons, Leigh, Scott, and Todd; daughter-in-law, Debra; and grandchildren, Nolan, Trenton, and Evan. Predeceased by his wife, Mary Ann; and daughter, Maurya. A Funeral and Celebration of Life will be held November 24 at Forest Lawn and the Shadbolt Centre, Burnaby. https://www.mbfuneralsbc.com/obituary/Melvin-Shelley

Mel was a remarkable man of integrity and wisdom. Your accurate description of Mel and the impact he had on others brought back memories of my time with Mel both during our shared years at Urban Systems and after when I reached out to him to see how he was doing. I can still see that twinkle in his eye. He had such a positive impact on his profession, the communities where he worked and his colleagues. Truly a remarkable journey! Thanks for sharing the detail I did not know.
