Michael BESWICK Obituary

MICHAEL EDWARD BESWICK December 31, 1946 - March 2, 2023 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Michael Edward Beswick on Thursday, March 2, 2023 at Sunnybrook Hospital, Toronto, Ontario. Michael will be dearly missed by his wife, Kim; his daughter, Frances; his mother-in-law, Jean; his niece, Daniela; his sister, Linda; and brother-in-law, Paul; along with many close family members and wonderful friends. Michael had a great passion for travel and exploration. His love of the arts was infectious, and he was always keen to share his knowledge and excitement about his diverse taste in music, opera and all other artistic discoveries. He also loved golf, and his drive to get back out on the green deserves some credit for his phenomenal recovery after his double lung transplant in 2020. Michael was an incredibly generous man, not just with his tangible resources, but with his time, his attention, his interest and encouragement. He wanted those around him to find success, however they defined it, and sought to support them in whatever way he was able. Michael was in the first class at Trent University, graduating with an undergraduate degree in Mathematics, and the positive impact of his time at Trent lead to a lifelong involvement with the university. He had a fulsome career, largely in public sector pension plans, his time spent primarily at OMERS, where he finished his career as a Senior Executive. After retirement, he continued to bring his time and expertise to a variety organizational boards, including OPSEU Pension Trust Board, Trent University Board of Directors, Providence Healthcare Board of Directors, Canadian Red Cross and Sun Life Financial Trust. For their support and guidance during difficult times, Kim and Frances want to send heartfelt thanks to the Lung Transplant Team at Toronto General Hospital, as well as the doctors and nurses at Sunnybrook Health Sciences, who supported him in the last days of his time with us. As per Michael's wishes, cremation will take place with no visitation or service. A Celebration of Life will be held July 2023 so that all of us who loved him might have an opportunity to remember him together. If you would like to make a donation in remembrance of Michael, please consider one of the organizations close to his heart: The Canadian Red Cross, Trent University, Children of Alumni Scholarship, and the UHN Foundation, in support of the Lung Transplant Program.

We knew Michael as a neighbor when we first moved into the Bloor West neighborhood. We slowly got to know him and learned about his love of travel and his interest in many different things. He became a friend to our family. He would often sit in the garden with us and chat. We were saddened to see him go when he told us he was moving to the East side of the city. He made sure he stayed in touch and came by for an espresso anytime he was back on his old turf. We enjoyed many chats and visits with him and Kim. He seemed very happy with life and we were always happy to hear from him. We were very sad to hear of his passing. He was a friend and he will be missed.

Michael was my younger cousin (by one week) and we were the last Beswick men of our direct lineage. I had lost contact with Michael for over 60 years, until our Cousin Chris Palazzese (nee Beswick) reunited us at her house for her Mom's (our Aunt May) 94th birthday in 2016. Michael and Kim then visited us in LA in early 2018, enroute to their Tahiti cruise. I definitely regret those many lost years out of contact with Michael. Reading his obituary I realize how little I knew about his admirable background. However, above all, I was in awe of his courage and character in his final years - having a double-lung transplant AND heart bypass surgery during the height of the COVID pandemic. Michael never bemoaned his condition or sought sympathy, he just focused on his recovery and was out playing golf in record time. He is my hero!

So sad to read of Michael´s passing. I had the privilege of working for Michael at OMERS and experienced first hand his incredible pension knowledge and intellect. Michael had so many diverse interests and such a quick wit. I have many fond memories of times with Michael.
Larry and I send our deepest condolences to Kim, Frances and his family.

Immensely sad to learn of Michael´s death. I met him through work for OMERS and became a friend and golf companion. An extremely intelligent man and something of a humanist he was ever a good companion whether on social occasions or on the golf course. Michael always supported his friends and colleagues and was generous with his advice and encouragement. He will be warmly remembered by all who knew him.

So very sorry to hear of Michael's passing. He was a long time pension industry colleague with me and I very much admired his intelligence, insight and compassion for others. We also worked together in the health industry on the Providence Health Care Board. He will be missed. Deepest sympathies to Kim and the family.

I worked for many years with Michael at OMERS on a consulting relationship and before and after our retirements on a social basis with Kim and both Lynn and I immensely enjoyed Michael's intellect and his 'Jois de Vivre' and his preopensity to travel to so many intersting places. Our condolences to both Kim and Frances and our expression of many happy memories to share

Kim/Frances
My full hearted condolences. I am so glad that you managed to get a couple more years with him after the transplant. I am also very happy that I was able to reconnect with him at least by email and phone during that period. I do so regret not getting to see him this winter as I had planned.
We were close, from that first year at Trent and managed to intersect from time to time over the years.
I just wish we had done it more.
A wonderful, bright, loving and complex fellow.

Dear Kim and Frances. Deepest condolences on Michael´s passing. I had the pleasure to work with him during his time on the Canadian Red Cross Board. His contributions were numerous but he will be equally remembered for his passion for the mission and his kindness and support to fellow Director and those of us on staff who support the Board. His laughter was infectious. While he has been off the Board for awhile he has never been forgotten. May good memories and knowing he leaves a strong legacy help you through this difficult time.
