Michael BURNS Obituary

MICHAEL BURNS With deep sadness, Shelly Burns and Charles Burns share the news of the passing of their father, Michael Burns, on June 10, 2023, aged 85. Herbert Michael Burns was born on June 19, 1937, beloved brother of Joan Addison and the late Dinny Day; son of the late Charles F.W. and Janet Burns; and grandson of Herbert D. and Margarite Burns and Canada's first woman senator, Cairine and Norman Wilson. In 2015, Michael Burns was widowed with the death of his wife, Sue Cathers Burns; and is survived by Judy Jenkins Burns, the mother of his children. Michael lived a remarkable life. Born in Toronto and raised in King, Michael attended St. Andrew's College before going to Trinity College School. At TCS, Michael excelled at everything. He was co-Head Prefect, a varsity athlete, and team captain in football, hockey and gymnastics. At Cornell University, he played football and hockey before following in his father's footsteps onto Bay Street at Burns Brothers & Denton. From 1978-1998, Michael was Chairman and CEO of Crown Life, Extendicare and Crownx and served on many corporate boards over the years. Informally, Michael was a trusted friend to the next generation in business. Many dropped in for his advice, his door always open. Being Stuart Cottrelle's partner in Bayshore Home Health was one of Michael's pinnacle successes. Michael keenly felt an obligation to champion local causes and give a hand-up to those less fortunate. His hosting of the Country Day School annual auction is legendary in King Township lore. Michael supported many charities; he chaired United Way Toronto's Major Gifts Cabinet, the new United Way of York Region, the York Regional Police Chief's gala, and the McMichael Art Gallery, and hosted the G7 leaders and Iqaluit artists. He was President of the Royal Winter Fair and Chancellor of Renison College. He donated to every hospital foundation that asked and every worthy cause pitched by friends. Michael's greatest benevolence went to Trinity College School. He built up his family's legacy, the Burns Scholarship, for exceptional students from Atlantic Canada to receive a first-class education. Farming and cattle were also Michael's love. Kingfield Farm's Simmental herd won every champion rosette. Michael was an early leader in AI (artificial insemination) with his bulls' DNA enriching the bloodlines of today's North American beef cattle. He was as comfortable birthing a calf as strategizing in corporate board rooms. In the immortal lyrics of Neil Diamond, 'Money talks, but it don't sing and dance ... I'd much rather be forever in blue jeans.' Above all his accomplishments, Michael was our exceptional Dad. He was a rare single dad in the 1970s to us, Charles and Shelly Burns (Norman Kirton). His family grew: first with his second marriage to Sue and two young step-daughters, Kate Bahen and Tracey McCowen (Tommy Barlow), then, after his sister, Dinny, died of cancer, to her young teenagers, Catherine Day Phillips (Todd Phillips) and Richard Day (Lisa Carey). Dad's farmhouse was a second home to many who came for the food and stayed for the fun. Michael made this possible and provided for all. More recently, Michael was loved as Granddad. He shared many generous gifts and exciting family adventures with Trevor and Lauren Kirton, Jack, Susie (Gabe Wallace) and Mikey Bahen, Blake and Colton Phillips, and Dinny Coco Day. Dad grieved deeply for his wife, Sue. Since 2015, he had soldiered on with the wonderful friendship of the Merry Widowers of King, his TCS Old Boys, and his cadre of chums from the St. Andrew's Club in Delray Beach, Florida. For 20 years, the support of Liezl van Griensven made it possible for him to live at his beloved farm. We are very grateful for the companionship of so many. A service celebrating Dad's life will be held at the church that he attended every Sunday, All Saints Anglican Church, 12935 Keele Street, King City on June 29, 2023, at 1 p.m. A reception for all will follow at his farm. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Burns Scholarship at Trinity College School would have been Michael's wish.

In the mid nineties, I went to work as Dir. Development at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection where Michael served as Board Chair -- always wise and gracious. At his behest I started and ran the McMichael Canadian Art Foundation. At that time, Michael had left the "Big Board" and he was recruited to Chair the Foundation board. Our first task was to recruit a group of trustees and Michael "had the best personal phone directory of anyone in Ontario." Together, we recruited an amazing board and started raising real money.

During my forty year fundraising career, I worked with many Bd. Chairs. Michael was the best, and it wasn't even close. He knew exactly what needed to be done, pitched in when appropriate, and always did so with a smile on his lips and a twinkle in his eyes. He was a true gift to me and to the museum. Requiescat in pace!

I met Michael Burns for the first time when I came over from the UK to be Executive Director at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection. The then Chair, Andrew Dunn, had organized a dinner to welcome me, and I had the immense pleasure of sitting next to Mr Burns, who entertained me royally with wonderful stories of his battles and triumphs with Robert McMichael. I was honoured to be able to welcome him back to the Gallery that meant so much to him just last year. He was a little frail by then, but still irrepressibly full of stories. He will always be remembered by us all at the McMichael: a great man.

My name is Greg Latremoille. May I first pass on to all the Burns family members my very deep condolences at this very sad time.
I worked at Beutel Goodman for 39 years, and got to know Michael first, as an "owner" of part of our firm, and second, as a client of mine in the BG Private Client Group for well more than a few decades. Michael, because of his vast knowledge of the investment business, was wonderful to work with.
I was fortunate to always be talking to very much an equal, which made our relationship most pleasant.
Michael was funny, always had a story or two, and we laughed a lot.
But we were serious too. Markets go up and down, and the "ups" were always more fun, but Michael well understood the "downs", so panic wasn't in his psyche.
Michael got me involved with the McMichael many years ago, and I still maintain a strong relationship with the Gallery. He was generous to a fault.
Definitely a Man for the times.
I will miss him.
Again, my sincere sympathy to the family.

I knew Michael from his McMichael Gallery days. First meeting I attended, Bob McMichael was adamant that Michael should resign as Chair of the Board, however Michael stood his ground, no one supported Bob McMichael's request, and as a result I was able to observe Michael Burn's skill as a Board Chair for a number of years. I learned a lot from him and greatly admired his humble attitude to all that he encountered. Truly a great man/

My condolences to the Burns family for the passing of Michael Burns, one of my best friend. I will sure miss him very much. I worked for Crown life from 1979 to 1997. He took me all over the World on conference with the company & beautiful wife.
The best conference in 1986 in Portugal, where after the president dinner we all jumped in the pool with our clothes on.
I have so manny beautiful memories of all our conference & trip all over the World.
He became such good friends I visited him @ his home regularly. The last time I had the pleasure to see him was @ my granddaughter Communion in May 2023 he came to the restaurant to have dinner with us, little did I know that the would be the last time I would ever see him. I am shocked & saddened to hear of his passing from Daughter Danielle tonight, both of my daughters attend Country Day, because of Mr. Michael Burns. I will definitely miss you him very much. He was the nicest man I have ever met.
May he rest in peace along with his beautiful wife.
Bye for now friend until we meet again.
