MICHAEL DE PENCIER Obituary

C.M. O.Ont. LL.D. January 19, 1935 – October 6, 2024 Mike de P loved life and all of its gifts with a contagious enthusiasm. He had a rare drive and boundless energy that he poured into learning, friendship, marriage, family, business, community, philanthropy and environmental activism until his last day. He was predeceased by his brother, John; and leaves his beloved wife of 62 years, Honor (née Bonnycastle); his children, Nicholas (Jennifer Baichwal), Miranda, and Mark (Kelly Szandtner); grandchildren, Magnus, Anna, Jasmine, Quinn; and many loving nieces and nephews. A graduate of Trinity College School (where he was captain of the hockey team) and Trinity College U of T, he was later a PhD student in philosophy at the University of Michigan when he decided that ideas were more interesting to him when put into motion. With no experience, and a little money crowdsourced from friends and family, he ventured into the magazine business. Toronto was burgeoning, and Mike was an optimist and serial entrepreneur, undaunted by early challenges and naysayers. The formula proved successful, and guided by his unique and humble leadership style, the group he founded went on to publish some of Canada's marquee periodicals including Toronto Life, Wedding Bells, the 'Key To' and Where visitor chains (in over 41 cities), Canadian Business, Canadian Geographic, Canadian Art, Owl, Chickadee, Quill and Quire, Gardening Life, and Fashion, among many others. This branched out into the partnerships of Key Porter Books, Maple Tree Press, and Greey de Pencier books. Among Michael's other ideas that stuck: The Yonge/Summerhill food stores and The Perfect Mix. It was axiomatic to him that the commitment he poured into growing commercial initiatives should be equally applied to nurturing the ecosystems around them and the community in which he lived. He was instrumental in building the Canadian publishing industry through associations, awards, and policy including the National Magazine Awards and Toronto Arts Awards. Once called "the Guy Lafleur of the Boardroom," he gave relentless energy to many different charitable organizations, serving on multiple boards including Women's College Hospital and the Canadian Opera Company, and as chair of the Shaw Festival, The Ontario College of Art (later OCADU), and the World Wildlife Fund. When he retired as WWF Board Chair in 2007, CEO and Chief Conservation Officer Monte Hummel called him "an irrepressible fountain of ideas" and declared that Michael had "exhausted" him. At the age of 67, de Pencier sold the publishing ventures to focus full time on climate change, biodiversity, and environmental sustainability issues. He co-founded InvestEco Capital, the first Canadian investment management firm focused exclusively on sustainability, as well as the Green Living Show, and numerous other green business ventures. He was a leader with his own philanthropy, and, through Trees for Life, the Highway of Heroes Tree Tribute, GrandTrees Climate Solutions, Kids' Run for Nature, the Natural Burial Association, and a slate of other non-profit initiatives, he has helped to raise millions of dollars and plant millions of trees, his greatest passion. He woke up every day wanting to make the world a better place. With his death we have lost a smooth skater, a sure paddler, a thoughtful mentor, an obsessive tree planter, a world-class reveler. He was a quiet, courageous, builder of vital, just, and beautiful realms that will outlast him far into the future. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. on November 5, 2024, at Koerner Hall, 273 Bloor Street West, Toronto. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to an environmental organization.

As Chair of the OCADUniversity Board of Governors Michael assured the controversial passage of an employment equity plan that would see women received equal access to teaching. For this we are forever grateful. A visionary and a fair man.

Michael changed my life, as he did many others, when I came to work for Key Publishers at Quill & Quire. I was fresh out of university and eager to get involved in the publishing world. Michael had a talent for encouraging people to thrive and do things they never believed they were capable of. If he had an idea - for instance, to create a Canadian magazine association - he would reach out to someone on staff and make it happen. I was lucky enough to be picked by him on several ventures, including reviving Canadian Art magazine. He truly never ran out of ideas for advancing Canadian and Toronto culture. I will niss him dearly. But like so many others whose lives he touched, I will never forget him.

Michael De Pencier was a very special character. He completely charmed and inspired those of us who worked for him (Toronto Life Magazine). I will never forget his humor, his kindness, his energy, his smile/laugh and his genuine interest in what we would be discussing. Michael was an incredibly supportive boss. He was an all round fun person and "as bright as a spark". So sorry to hear he is gone. I am sure he will live on in many hearts, as he will do in mine. Thank you Michael for a great time over 18 years and for everything you did for me. My sincere condolences to Honor and the family. RIP. Christine Giavarini .

I met Michael many years ago when I was applying to be the NY rep for Toronto Life magazine. After our meeting he said to the sales manager `hire her´. And the fun began. A year later the sales manager left and after talking to the other sales people I had their approval and became the new ad sales manager. Michael´s style! Then I became the publisher of Your Money magazine. Michael was so involved in those days and so much fun. My next move was Canadian Geographic mag and Michael stayed in touch. My mentor. He was a big promoter of women in the magazine business and I was lucky to be one. He will be greatly missed by all who ever worked for him. An exceptional person, so with so many ideas and enthusiasm. He made work fun!

I happened on Michael´s obituary this afternoon. I am deeply touched and saddened. I worked for Toronto Life magazine
(and many other titles) as a new stand sales representative 1979-1983. I was honoured to hold such a title, and work for such a wonderful company. Michael was always present, a classy gentleman to everyone he encountered. A life beautifully lived.

Whilst living in London, Michael called me one evening and said he heard I was there and would I like to help him with WHERE London, a title he had just bought. I immediately said yes!
I spent the next 3 + years helping to upgrade the quality of the advertising: theatre, fine antique and art galleries in St James's and Mayfair..I told him he was paying me to do what I did naturally.
A few years later I returned to help launch Wedding Bells in the USA..
Thank you Michael..You were always kind, generous, thoughtful and fun.
You are probably launching a scroll in Heaven as we speak!

So sad to hear the world has lost Michael. He was always there during some high pressure years for me at CPAWS and we'd go out for lunch, spout big ideas and laugh. He went way beyond with his energy to help nudge so many ideas out into the sun. Michael will be so missed. He was an original, a coach and inspirator to so many.

I worked briefly at Greey de Pencier 50 years ago. Michael was a benign strong presence. His character and energy infused the enterprise with purpose and integrity. If only there were more like him - then and now!

I was one of many people whose life was impacted by Michael. I met Michael 22 years ago when I was searching for a way to combine my interests in ecology and business. Michael invited me onto the board of advisors at InvestEco and onto the fund raising committee of WWF Canada, as the then Chair of the board. He was a constant source of inspiration, energy and advice over many years and drew me into other of his ventures like Trees for Life. I was delighted that during my final year as Chair of WWF that he was selected by the organization to receive an award at the Panda Ball, for his innumerable achievements in the sector. Somehow it felt like Michael was perpetual force. His passing leaves a big hole.

Michael was a cyclone of ideas... indeed.
But much more he was committed to creating a world worthy of a future for his children and grand children. He thought of others and got up each morning with passion to make a positive difference. Without him the Highway of Heroes Tree Campaign, GrandTrees Climate Solutions and Trees For Life would not have happened. It is a gross understatement to suggest that he will be missed as we have a huge green hole to fill with him no longer working with us.

It was quite a shock to hear of Micheal De Pencier's passing over a week ago. Condolences to his family. I began my career in digital media working for Where Magazines International which Key Publishers owned at the time and he had a big impact on the start of my career. It was such a pleasure to reconnect with him in the last few years through my work with the Toronto Field Naturalists and have the opportunity to work with him on a nature conservation project. He had tremendous impact in the media industry and on nature conservation.

I am so sorry to learn of Michael's passing. I worked for Key then Where from 1984 - 2019. Michael would send notes on cocktail napkins of advertising prospects we should pitch. He worked hard and played as hard. He was the most fun at the conferences and never missed a session. He was a mentor and supporter of the Vancouver business. I can say that my time working with/for him was the BEST. I will remember him fondly always and am sorry not to be present on November 5th. My condolences to Honor and his family. This obituary is a true testament to a fine Canadian. This world needs more Michaels!

What a great guy! Michael offered me roles in his company three times. Unfortunately, the timing never aligned.

I was always amused that the sunlight revealed a puff of dust whenever we sat on his old couch. There were piles of books and magazines everywhere. It was like sitting with a "not-so-absent-minded" professor.

Michael and I shared a love of people, magazines, creative ideas, Georgian Bay, and sports. He was one of my two co-sponsors joining the B & R Club.

When it was time for him to sell, I played a small role in merging our companies, to create St. Jospeph Media, where I became President.

He was a cool, remarkable man who knew how to live life. My condolences to Honor & family.

It was a great honour and pleasure to know Michael and call him my friend (and golf pal). Such an honorable and intelligent guy, full of energy and ideas, and so committed to giving back to his society and country, after decades of business success. A great role model for his family, and all young professionals. I extend my sincere condolences to Honor and the entire family.

My most sincere condolences to Michael De Pencier's family.

Michael was a committed philanthropist who enriched the many literary, arts, cultural and environmental organizations to which he selflessly gave so much time and energy. He understood the importance and subtleties of leadership and governance in these mission-driven organizations and was of immeasurable help to me in my early years as an executive search consultant in this field.

I will always be grateful for Michael's wise counsel.

I have been a friend of de P's since our days together at TCS many, many years ago. In my experience, every word in the obituary was bang on. Beyond that, he was always a delight to be with as we lunched often together. My wife Rosemary and I join Honor and the family in morning his passing. We feel your sadness but, are relieved by the thought that Mike left a better world behind him in part due to his contribution to it.

I am very, very sorry not to be able to attend Michael's celebration of life on Nov 5, because we were dear friends and close working colleagues. An "irrepressable fountain of ideas" indeed, and my predictable, exhausted response always was, "Michael, Michael! PICK ONE!" We even shared a tent on an Arctic canoe trip above tree-line, where he diplomatically described my snoring as "more like purring." A great Canadian, and a sweet man who walked the talk. Miss him now, and will always.--Monte Hummel, President Emeritus, WWF-Canada

We were lucky enough to live in a house in the Summerhill neighbourhood that had been modernized by Michael and Honor DePencier. They had bold taste--copen blue paint in the living room, a bookshelf that disguised a door to the basement and carpet that had been repurposed from the Toronto Board of Education boardroom.
It was always a pleasure to cross Summerhill Gardens and deliver the mortgage cheque. As a journalist I knew well the contributions he made to the city's culture--but only now have I learned that his was the genius behind the nearby stores.
I still remember the chicken salad from the butcher's. Thank you and much sympathy to the talented DePencier family

Michael was in my life many years ago in our magazine industry days. (He offered me a job I should have taken.) He came back into my life most recently as an environmental crusader. I took a day off work to protest the Greenbelt scandal of our current provincial government. It was a chilly day outside the Premier's constituency office, protesters lining the street and shouting slogans. There was Michael in the thick of it. We stayed in touch. He was generous and passionate. He shall be missed.
