Michael FELDMAN Obituary
MICHAEL C. FELDMAN Entrepreneur, civic activist, affordable housing champion and City of Toronto Deputy Mayor, died May 10, 2023. He was 95. In the 1950's Mike started Teela Data Market Surveys, the first version of today's real estate Multiple Listing Service (MLS). When Mike and his wife, Sue, were first house hunting, they were frustrated by the lack of price information on recent sales. Mike filled this void by creating a detailed report on housing sales in specific areas. By the time Mike sold his business at age 55 in 1983, he employed 500 people and had offices and printing plants across Canada and the U.S. Mike's leadership qualities in business were an asset in community service as well, with a focus on housing. He entered politics in 1992 as Councillor of Ward 7 of the then City of North York. He was appointed Deputy Mayor of the City of Toronto from 2003 - 2006, under David Miller's leadership. Mike believed that shelter was a basic right and fought for affordable housing for low- income families, seniors, and the physically and mentally challenged. He was Chair of the Metro Housing Development Corporation and under his watch, the organization added almost 20,000 affordable units to their existing portfolio. He also helped establish one of the early rent- geared-to-income communities complete with community and daycare centres. Mike was the beloved husband of Sue Feldman for over 73 years. Son of the late Annie and Isadore Feldman; and son-in-law of the late Israel and Rose Rosen. Loving father and father-in-law of Sandi Stuart and Barnet Bain, Debra Feldman and Rick Pottens, and Steven Feldman. Dear brother and brother-in-law of Marcia and the late Leon Donsky, the late Art and Ida Feldman and the late Lila and Murray Kirsh. Devoted grandfather of Sophie and Simone, Ari and Lucy, Mathew and Emily, Seth and Rosalind. Delighted great-grandfather of Jack and Theo. Respected cousin, uncle, friend and mentor to many. The service was held at Benjamin's Park Memorial Chapel on Friday, May 12, 2023. Memorial donations may be made to the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health 416-535-8501 ext 4.
