MICHAEL HADLEY Obituary

(April 6, 1936 – March 4, 2026) Michael Hadley died peacefully, on March 4th, in Victoria. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 67 years, Anita; his children, Pauline (Bernie), David (Lori), Michèle (Robert); and his grandchildren, Tess (Marley), Madison, Luke, Olivia, and Alexandria. He was predeceased by his dear son, Norman. From his first home at Pachena Point lighthouse on the west coast, Michael's young life was defined by a deep love of the ocean. At age 15, he first went to sea as a cabin boy and later, while at the University of British Columbia, joined the Naval Reserve. He passed his passion for sailing, the wind and the trim of a mainsail to his children. He loved knowing the waters of BC and being a part of the coast. Intellectually curious, Michael earned degrees including his Ph.D. in German Language and Literature; he loved to share his knowledge and was an inspiring professor at the University of Victoria. His faith quietly shaped the ways he lived his life, treated all people, and understood the world. He also had a commitment to music starting in his early years playing trumpet in dance and jazz bands. Later in life he was acclaimed as a published author, award-winning naval historian, and researcher in the field of Restorative Justice. In 1998 he was inducted into the Royal Society of Canada. While the sea, literature, music and his deep faith were major threads in the tapestry of Michael's rich life, it was his loving family that daily filled his heart with joy. Michael's funeral will be held Tuesday, March 24th, at 2:00 p.m. at Christ Church Cathedral in Victoria. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Victoria Hospice.

Anita. Please accept Marcia and my condolences. I knew Michael through the Restorative Justice community where we worked together. Marcia and I both enjoyed very much Michael leadership when we came to The Cathedral. You were both a great support to us. I enjoyed our times when he would invite me to go and tell a yarn or two. He is going to be greatly missed by many. Love Logan and Marcia McMenamie

Condolences to the family for your loss.
Captain (N) Hadley was my first commanding officer when I joined the Naval Reserves at HMCS MALAHAT. Michael was very much liked and respected by all ranks. A talented author and historian who's books I have very much enjoyed reading cover to cover. He will be missed by the Naval Family.

I first met Mike around 1971, when he was Captain of one of the Navy's training vessels, and I was his Executive Officer. At the time, Mike was a Professor at the University of Victoria, who often spent his summers at sea with the Navy Reserve. He was smart, patient, calm, knowledgeable and an excellent leader. We got along very well and I learned a lot from him. In 1972, he encouraged me to go back to University to complete my degree. I did that and it changed the course of my life. Over the next 40 or so years, we only kept in touch via emails, but we managed to have occasional lunches together with other former HMCS Malahat alumni. Mike was a good man on so many levels and I am happy to have known him. "Sail on! Sail on! and on!"
My deepest condolences to Anita, their children and grandchildren.

My deepest sympathy to Michael's wife and family. I met Michael when I was in the History Department and then the Centre for Studi9es in Religion and Society. He was a wonderful man. I have a couple of his books and a wonderful coffee mug that I use to this day, and I haven't been at UVic since 1998. June Bull noe in Saint John, NB
