MICHAEL GEORGE HICKEY, K.C.
June 11, 1927 - January 20, 2023
Michael George Hickey passed away peacefully on January 20, 2023, from complications due to pneumonia. He was surrounded by his greatest joy in life, the love of his family. Michael is survived by his beloved wife, Joan (née Millan); and his three children, Jane Candlish (Peter), J. Michael Hickey (Barb), and Diana Carradine (Chris). Michael was an adoring grandad to his seven grandchildren, each of whom he was so proud; Barbara (John Norman), Jack, Mike, James, Julia, Jessica and William. Michael was predeceased by his parents, John M. Hickey and Helen; as well as his twin brothers, John T. Hickey and David N. Hickey. Born in Kingston, Ontario, Michael attended St. Mary's School, Regiopolis College and Queen's University. Following in his father's footsteps, Michael went on to complete his law degree at Osgoode Hall in Toronto. He practiced briefly with prominent Toronto trial lawyer, Roy McMurtry Sr., before returning to Kingston to join his father in practice at Hickey and Hickey. Michael leaves a legal legacy as a highly respected litigator, practicing law for 64 years. He served as a bencher for the Law Society of Upper Canada for three terms, and in 2001, received the Frontenac Law Association Lou Tepper Award of Excellence for his exceptional contributions to the legal profession. Michael served on the Hotel Dieu Hospital Board of Directors, chaired the 1986 -1990 expansion appeal for St. Mary's of the Lake Hospital and, as President of Kingston Cable Television Ltd., was instrumental in bringing cable television to Kingston. For these efforts and many more, Michael received the Commemorative Medal for the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada for his outstanding contributions to Canada and his community. When Michael wasn't at the office, he was with his family. He and Joan exemplified true love in every sense of the word, having recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. While they travelled to many places together, Michael was happiest on the tractor, the dock or the veranda at his family cottage on Hickey's Point, Howe Island. Michael was a man of great integrity, humility, thoughtfulness and humour. He was also a keen sailor, avid skier and a terrible golfer. And no pun was left unspoken, no matter how bad, he honestly couldn't help himself. The Hickey family would like to thank Cecilia Gonzales and Brenda Jimenez for their care and compassion, as well as the outstanding staff at Cataraqui Heights Retirement Residence, and the nurses, doctors and staff at Kingston Health Sciences Centre, ICU. Visitation will be held at Gordon F. Tompkins Funeral Home, 49 Colborne St., Kingston, on Thursday, January 26, from 5 - 7 p.m. A funeral mass will be held on Friday, January 27, 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 392 Palace Rd. A reception will take place immediately following the mass with details to be confirmed on the funeral home website
