MICHAEL JOHNS Obituary
(May 18, 1931 – February 14, 2026) Born in Montevideo, Uruguay, educated at St. Georges College, Argentina, obtained a Bachelor of Commerce degree at McMaster University, Canada. There, he captained with his identical twin brother, Peter, the university soccer team, winning the inter-university championship. A highly successful business career with Seagrams and Co. took him to Montreal, New York, and eventually, back to South America. There he spent what he said were his happiest years, opening up the vineyards in Southern Brazil for Seagrams. Declining the top post there, he took early retirement and returned to make his home in Canada in 1991. After several chilly winters in Ottawa, he and his wife, Alys, moved to Victoria, BC, for the balance of his life. A patient, loving, generous man, Michael will be deeply missed. Survived by his wife, Alys, he also leaves his sons, Ian (Chantal) of Edmonton (and their children, Rheanne and Monica), Michael (Luciana) of Rhode Island (and their children, Megan, Nicole, Garrett); as well as Michael and Alys' great-grandchildren. Loving family in Ottawa and South America include Michael's last brother, Hamish Johns (Sarah) and their children, Robin, Andrea, Tegan, Christopher; and in Uruguay, Sandra Johns Bocking and her husband, Nico, and their children, Nico Jr. and Pedro. Cremation has occurred, and Michael will be interred at Beechwood Cemetery, Ottawa, in the spring, close to his parents, Ian and Babs Johns.
