Michael JONES Obituary

MICHAEL ALLEN WESTOVER JONES Predeceased by his father, George Allen and brother, George. Survived by his partner of forty- seven years, Judy Archer; his mother, Laura; siblings, Myron (Enid Eriksson), Chris (Francine Ball), Lisa Colombo; and sister-in-law, Liz Cassidy. Michael passed away in Orillia on January 19, 2022. Leadership educator, facilitator, and pianist, he touched many people with his sixteen piano recordings, and his stories. He holds a BA in Music and Psychology from Mount Allison University, and a MA in Adult Learning from University of Toronto. For over twenty years he was a thought leader with the MIT Dialogue Project, Banff Centre for Leadership Development, the Executive Leadership Programs at the University of Texas, San Antonio, The International Leadership Association and the Fetzer Institute Dialogues on Leading for Transformation. The Fetzer Institute supported the publication of The Soul of Place. The Brueninger Foundation hosted place-based retreats for three years at Wasan Island in Muskoka. He wove his music and place-based themes in multi-disciplinary conferences. More recently he integrated these themes into the Truth and Reconciliation workshops at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity and Truth and Reconciliation Round Table online and in Orillia. Michael will be most remembered for his question, "Who will play your music if you don't?" Many thanks to the compassionate staff at Mariposa House Hospice. I finally found this letter that I received from Michael. He, Judy and I met at an NTL Institute workshop in Bethel, Maine. I remember listening to him play at a small nearby "club"/bar/ restaurant. His music lifted my spirits, to put it mildly! We corresponded in the months afterwards. He sent me a "demo" tape, and I was "hooked!" When his albums were released by Narada, I became a collector. When I learned of his passing, my heart sank. I have a playlist of his music that enables me to keep in touch beyond the limits of time. Rest in peace, dear Michael!

Judy. This is a very late post that I hope you can open. I like both you owned cottages on Big Hawk Lake many years ago and we visited from time to time. Micheal gave us a few of his CD´s.My husband passed a year ago and as you know life is difficult. I always play his CD at supper. Wishing you support and healing at a difficult time. We continue to enjoy his music.

I first listened to Michael´s music and melodic storytelling at a Systems Thinking in Action conference in San Francisco in the late `90s. This led me to enjoy him more closely when he was a leader of dialogue (with Dia-logos) programs in York, Maine. He opened my heart and helped me and so many others connect to their innate creative spirit. One profound quote I´ve never forgotten, he shared someone asked him: "if you don´t play your music...who will?" This led me on a creative path ever since and even while trudging along in business life. His musical gift was a promise that each can find themselves through artistic expression, if only they listen to its calling. RIP to a wonderful soul. I´ll listen to Touch (as I still do so often) in his honor.

Michael's music was an early part of Hospice here in Orillia as he gave Hospice a number of his CDs to be shared with clients back in the early 1990s. We have always been so grateful for his music.

Judy, I am so sad to think that Michael has passed. What a wonderful guy who regularly filled my back yard with his sweet music. I always enjoyed my chats with him and valued his soft and thoughtful perspective on whatever was the topic. Wishing you well as you deal with his loss.
