Michael MURPHY Obituary

MICHAEL STEPHEN ROBERT MURPHY Michael Stephen Robert Murphy, beloved husband, father, and grandfather passed away peacefully at Michael Garron Hospital, on January 26, 2023, surrounded by his family. He is survived by the love of his life and wife of 48 years, Joann Pawson; as well as his much loved children, Stephen, William (Melissa), and Elizabeth (Sean Steele). His memory will live on in his cherished grandchildren, Owen, Charlotte, and Archer. Michael grew up in Montreal, the son of the late Edith and Joseph Murphy, with his siblings, Sheila and Carl (Cathy McIninch). He met his wife, Joann, there when they were 15 and they have been in love ever since. He attended Loyola College where he excelled academically and went on to complete graduate degrees at Oxford University and the London School of Economics. After a decade living, traveling, and working in England, he and Joann returned to make a home in Toronto. There he followed his passion as a portfolio manager, first with CP then with Sceptre Investment Counsel where he became a partner and director. Following a move to Vancouver and a diagnosis of CLL in the late nineties, he retired from finance and enrolled at University of BC, earning a B.Ed. He was dedicated to sharing his love of math and reading with the youngest students. The family would like to thank Dr. Peter Tsang at VGH for prolonging his life during a 25 year battle with Leukemia. Michael was an avid golfer who played some of the best courses in the world and was a long-time member of the Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club and The Hunt Club. Both on and off the golf course he maintained many lifelong friendships and could always be counted on for love and support in a time of need. Family was the cornerstone of Michael's rich and full life and his laughter and love will be dearly missed. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Michael's memory to the Palliative Care Ward of Michael Garron Hospital through www.mghf.ca. Funeral services will be held at St. John's Catholic Church, 794 Kingston Rd. at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 3rd.

Michael was a friend and mentor to me at Sceptre. His sly wit, intelligence and humour filled many rich conversations. It was an honour to work with him and for his family.

Given the alphabetical order of the seating arrangement in High School, Mike sat directly in front of me for three years and we became good friends. we recently reestablished contact and he detailed his battle with CLL. Mike was a super bright, gentle, kind human being and I am so sorry he is gone. Peace be with you Mike.

Dear Michael,
I recall during a family dinner your impish impersonation, a white handkerchief knotted at four corners on your head, of a Cockney Brighton bather. You were a very special and accomplished person. I will never forget you.
