MICHAEL RUSE Obituary

Michael Escott Ruse was born June 21, 1940, in Birmingham, England, and died the morning of November 1, 2024; he was an intellectual titan. After completing his undergraduate degree at the University of Bristol, he moved to Canada to complete a master's degree at McMaster University. During the expansion of Ontario's university system in the 1960s, he obtained a faculty position at the fledgling University of Guelph. During a year-long leave, he returned to the University of Bristol to complete a PhD in the nascent field of philosophy of biology, placing him among the field's founders. He often remarked that it was during this year that he discovered that he was a talented writer. The first of his over 70 books, which cover a wide variety of topics – many translated in other languages – was The Philosophy of Biology, which became a foundational treatise in the field. He founded the first journal in the field Biology and Philosophy and was a founding member of the International Society for the History, Philosophy and Social Studies of Biology. He was a leading expert on Victorian science and society and Darwinian evolution. In 2000, he accepted a position as Lucyle T. Werkmeister Professor of Philosophy, and the Director of the History and Philosophy of Science Program at Florida State University. He was a Fellow of both the Royal Society of Canada (1986) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The University of Bergen, McMaster University, the University of New Brunswick and University College London conferred on him honorary doctorates. He frequently commented on his love for and gratitude to his wife, Lizzie (married February 16, 1985), and the joy that his five children, Nigel, Rebecca, Emily, Oliver and Edward; and seven grandchildren, Christian, Brayden, Sawyer, Ariel, Lucy, Anastasia and Alice brought him. He will be missed by them and the many others whose lives he enriched. Although he was a complicated and controversial person, he also was generous, kind and nurturing, in part due to his early upbringing in the Society of Friends (Quakers) – as he would let those around him know. His family, friends and the world have lost a giant.

I met Michael in 1979 when we were both single parents and we shared family events together. Michael and i made a great comedy team at the faculty club friday evenings, both so outrageous! But we were both much younger than. In closing, Michael was very kind and when I needed an emergency baby sitter (I was in health and working odd hours), he stepped up more than once to look after my children. The favour was returned on my part by hosting Nigel and Rebecca when Michael had a conflict. Unfortunately our lives went in different directions and I lost touch. All my best to his spouse Lizzie, children and grandchildren.

So very saddened to learn of the passing of Michael Ruse. I met Michael when we were both on the faculty at the University of Guelph in the 1990s. He was a thoughtful scholar who was not afraid to present challenging and controversial ideas. I learned a great deal from Michael and greatly valued his thoughtful perspectives and wry sense of humor.

My deepest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. He will be dearly missed.

I just found out about Michael's passing. I owe him a lot and will miss him. He was a generous mentor (even though I was not his student) and never boring. Best wishes to Lizzie and his family.

Michael was my undergraduate philosophy of religion prof at Guelph in 1981, and enjoyed him very much, and have read a couple of his later books recently. Would all teachers be so engaging.

Shortly after joining Florida State University (FSU) in 2018, I received an e-mail from Michael to introduce himself as he was curious to find a new faculty who had studied at the University of Guelph (UoG), Ontario, Canada, where he used to teach. I was so thrilled to hear from him, I told him I took one of his courses ("History of Science"), probably in 1978/9, as an elective when studying for my undergraduate degree at UoG. (My family is in Toronto.) I also mentioned that his class was one of my favorites, and he really opened up my world regarding science. He was a dynamic and engaging teacher, who challenged his students to think outside the box. This connection was delightful and meant a lot to me. Meanwhile, I also found out that one of my professors, Jerry Ferris, who served on my dissertation committee from my graduate-school days was also at FSU. I arranged a get-together with two of my favorite teachers and their respective spouse and mine for a dinner at the newly open French restaurant in town. The restaurant gave us a private room, so we had a very intimate reunion. I learnt from Michael he also knew my undergraduate advisor and his wife. He mentioned that at the time UoG had mandatory retirement age, but he thought he was too young to retire thus he came to FSU. I had planned to keep in touch with Michael, then the pandemic grinded put everything into slow motion. I reached out to Michael a couple of times after the pandemic, but did not hear back from me. I wish I could see and chat with him one last time. Nonetheless, I was glad we did reconnect, and his influence on his former students (even one like me only had 1 class with him) is profound. He had instilled in us to think "big" and "outside the box." Now I will start re-reading his many books!

Michael's passing strikes a solemn cord in all who knew this controversal and highly complex man now to be remembered principally for his prodigious scholarship and his immense kindness. Sincere condolences to the family, but especially to Lizzy whose love made all the difference in the world.
