MICHAEL SILVER Obituary

1960-2024
Michael Philip Silver (1960-2024) was a loving partner, a generous and devoted dad, a supportive brother, a caring son, an involved uncle, an extremely gregarious and generous friend, and a passionate defender of the environment. Mike was also a doting grandfather, or Saba as he liked to be called. Mike passed away suddenly on Monday November 4, in the morning. He loved life and was planning a trip to the Antarctic. He is predeceased by his mother Diane Silver and step mother Myrna Hurwich Silver. He is survived by his long-time partner Naomi, his ex-wife Sandy, his two children Alexandra and Jeremy, his brother Seth (Sue), his step siblings Linda (Marshall) and Michael (Natalya), his father Harvey, his nephews Daniel, Josh, Adam and Jonathan, and nieces Jackie, Sarah (Mitch), Lauren, Emily, and Stephanie, and his step-children, Lee Carlo (Ciara), Patrick, and Paulo (Kayla).

Mike was born in Toronto, spent four years of his childhood in Buffalo and the rest in Toronto, and then later the University of Western Ontario and Cambridge University. Mike was a lawyer who became a mediator, and was a pioneer of mediation in Ontario. He was incredibly successful for three decades at helping parties in deep conflict resolve differences and reach win-win settlements. In his work, Mike was brilliant at empathy, understanding issues, and facilitating solutions. But Mike's real passions were in travelling the world (he visited over 98 countries), spending time with friends and family at his cottage or on the water, and protecting the planet. Mike led the effort to create the Torrance Barrens Conservation Reserve and Dark Sky Preserve, and was a leader on committees overseeing their management and protection. He met with politicians, wrote letters, and advocated often on climate change. He was active on political issues and was Pierre Trudeau's earliest ally against the Notwithstanding Clause.

Mike was also an avid collector. Mike had a world class art collection, fossils and meteorites any museum would envy, antique furniture (some going back to the 1600s!) and rare Canadian coins. He loved his toys - and made them all available to anyone who wanted to try them. Mike was larger than life, had an adventurous spirit, and an endearingly goofy sense of humor. He loved hosting dinners, family events and holidays, gave generous gifts over the years to numerous friends and family, and exuberantly loved life and new experiences.

We are devastated by his passing, and with deep sorrow will miss his laugh, his passionate views on issues of the day, his jolly presence, and his generosity of spirit. Mike, we love you and are heartbroken.

Funeral services will be held November 7th at Benjamin's Park Memorial Chapel. See www.benjaminsparkmemorialchapel.ca for details. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Muskoka Conservancy www.muskokaconservancy.org/donate.

Like everyone else, I was shocked by the news of Michael's untimely passing. Mike and Sandy and their then young family were fun neighbours in Toronto. Mike was one of my mediation mentors and let me shadow him on mediations he was conducting in the early days of the Mandatory Mediation Project. Later on I regularly retained him to mediate my cases. He was one of the best. Mike seemed to be interested in everything and everyone. His collection of fossils, meteorites and other antiquities was fascinating. Sincerest condolences to Naomi and the extended Silver family.

Dear Silver Family:

My sincere condolences to you and your family on the loss of such a wonderful, intelligent and passionate human being. I met Michael many years ago through my work, and retained him frequently as a mediator, beginning with his time as one of the original mediators in the Mandatory Mediation Pilot Project on Grenville St. We became friends over the years, and I co-taught mediation and negotiation with Michael for several years at Ryerson. Over the years, we shared many happy moments and interesting conversations over lunches, dinners in Toronto, and occasional weekends at the Silver cottages. Michael was one of the brightest and most interesting people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. More importantly, he was caring and compassionate; a great listener who helped me through some tough times. He had a wonderful sense of humor and wit.

Such a terrible loss to his family, friends and to the legal community. I am in shock. I will miss him. May he rest in peace.

Michael will be greatly missed as a skilled mediator, a distinguished member of the bar and a fundamentally decent human being. His service in seeking to achieve the efficient administration of Justice through mediation helped many save money, avoid needless anxiety and achieve a sense of Justice. Michael strived mightily. May he now rest in peace and perpetual light shine upon him until we hopefully meet again in the great plenary session in the sky or at the very least in a virtual break out room.

I was shocked to hear about the death of Michael Silver. As a young lawyer based in Toronto, I had the privilege of attending several mediations conducted by Michael. He taught me a great deal about patience and getting to a resolution that all parties could live with. I use those skills frequently. It was always a pleasure working with him. May his memory be a blessing to all who loved him.

We regret to have known Mike only a short while, especially since we looked forward to seeing more of him. We could only admire him for all he was as well as for all he shared. Such a rare collection of things could only give an inkling of the rare richness of his personality. He will be missed in Muskoka.

I was shocked and saddened to read Michael's obituary. I taught at the Western Faculty of Law in the early 1980s, and Michael was in my small group in Property Law in 1981 or 1982. I have taught thousands of law students but few remain in my memory. Michael does. He was so engaged in the study of law, with his professors and with his fellow students. I remember well his campaign to get the notwithstanding clause removed from the draft Charter. With the increasing use of the clause by provincial governments lately, the prescience of the young law student that he was, is quite amazing. I would be happy to share further memories of Michael, my email can be found on the Osgoode Hall Law School website.

My sincere condolences to Michael's family.

Mike and I organized a party for mutual friends´ engagement decades ago. What I can never forget is the effervescence he brought to the enterprise! He bubbled over with fun and humour. He will be sorely missed.

I only met Mike once but I knew right away that he was a kind and non judgemental soul. Its such a shock that he was happy and lively one day and gone the next. I feel grateful to have met him. I only wish I got the chance to get to know him more. My condolences to his family and loved ones. He will be dearly missed.
