Michel Proulx Obituary

THE HONOURABLE MICHEL PROULX
(1939-2007) The Honourable Michel Proulx passed away peacefully in Montreal, on January 14, 2007, after a courageous year-long battle with cancer. He leaves behind the love of his life, Brenda Zosky Proulx, his beloved daughters Sophie (Richard Wein), Genevieve (Michael Pecho), Magali (Eric Gelinas), and cherished stepdaughters Dana (Adam Kronick), Jennifer (Russel Levy) and Stacy (Brian Shiller), 13 grandchildren, his brother Daniel (Anick Rouleau), his sister Dianne, his nephews Xavier, Jean-David and Guillaume. He was predeceased by his adored son Francois-Michel Proulx. One of Canada's greatest Canadian criminal defence lawyers for 25 years, he was appointed to the Court of Appeal of Quebec where he had a distinguished 15-year career before returning to private practice at Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg in 2004. One of the most brilliant legal minds of his generation, Michel Proulx was always in the pursuit of an ideal of justice, as lawyer, judge, professor and author. Michel Proulx was the lawyer's lawyer when I knew him. His insight into what was just plain right and what was truly wrong made him a great judge. May his family find comfort in the present outpouring of anecdotes, sympathy and praise.

Our most sincere condolences to Brenda and to all of Michel's family. We share in your loss of such a great person.

Michel was a very highly respected contributor to our program, the justice system overall, and to our individual lives in many different ways.

The loss of such a warm and caring person as Michel creates an emptiness and sadness to all who have known him - we were privileged to have shared many great times and conversations over the years.

I'm so so sorry to hear of this terrible loss. Though I met him only once, I was truly impressed with his intellect and wit and above all amused by his excitement looking toward his new challenges at Davies Ward. Our condolences to his family.
