Mike LAW Obituary

MIKE LAW 1942 - 2021 On February 21, 2021 on a beautiful morning at his home in St Margaret's Bay, NS, Mike died peacefully with his family at his side. Mike leaves his wife of 46 years, Mary Ann (Gimby), his devoted sons, Jonathan and Jeremy, and family dog, Gracie. He also leaves his sisters, Janet (Bill Dickie) and Peggy (Vance White), the Gimby family, countless Law and Anderson relatives and many friends. Born to Ruth and Bob Law on March 9, 1942, Mike grew up in Oakville and went on to attend university where he pursued his love of football. Never a big guy, he developed his ability through hard work, determination and grit. Against the odds, he fulfilled his dream of playing in the CFL in 1967. He spent six great years as Defensive halfback in Edmonton before finishing his CFL career as a Grey Cup Champion with Ottawa. Mike and Mary Ann moved to Masons Point, NS where he taught high school. Weekends were spent with good friends in Wentworth, NS and summers were spent with his clan in Butternut Bay, ON. He was a hero and friend to many and we are grateful for a life well lived. A celebration of his life will take place later this year.

Mike visited Oakville Trafalgar High School in his hometown of Oakville, Ontario in the late 1960's. He sat down with several OT football players, myself included, for a chat about his experiences playing in the CFL. That was the only time that I met him but it left a lasting impression. In particular, I was impressed by his soft-spoken nature and his warmth and humility. RIP Mike.

As a young kid in Winnipeg, I arrived very early for a game against Edmonton. Already sitting in the stands near my seat, in uniform, was one of the visitors. We ended up chatting a bit; I have always thought how cool it was to unexpectedly meet a very humble CFL player, Mike Law.

Thank you “Mr. Law” for doing so much to foster my participation in competitive sports - he was my coach for a number of teams, and took extra time to give me opportunities in track and field which I pursued for many years after leaving Tantallon - I regret not keeping in touch and thanking him personally for all he did for me.
