I met Miles in Grade 9 at R H King Collegiate. I opted to take instrumental music and someone else in the brass class could not get a sound from French Horn. I could because of uncles in army bands who played trumpet. I learned French Horn quickly, within 4 months I was asked to play in Concert Band and Orchestra. WS assigned to First Horn desk with Miles. We had great time together for years, playing in Springtime Harmony, etc. Great relationship with Miles, a really good schoolmate. Never saw Miles again after high school as I moved on to Montreal and Vancouver. Sounds like he enriched the lives of many.

It was always great to see Miles. He had a dry innocent sense of humour which makes me smile thinking about it today. He was a tall, gentle and kind man. I knew Miles from the business but my closer connection came from Thursday morning hockey with the Ballet musicians.
By some coincidence, Miles grew up on the same street I lived on for more than 30 years, Glenridge Rd in Scarborough. In fact, when I did a reno on my place, Miles came by many times as he and his dad were planning a reno to their family home on Glenridge.
I was deeply saddened to hear of his death. He will be missed by his many music friends.

Miles Hearn, we remember you so well. You were our Music Director at the Unitarian Congregation in Mississauga, after your career as a teacher and (more or less) before your career as a nature interpreter on cruise vessels. Do I have that right? What a versatile guy ... and a great conversationalist too. We really benefited from your presence at our church on a Sunday morning. Blessings to Evelyne, whom we remember well.
Go Well, Miles.

Miles was a good friend and mentor
in what can be a very difficult profession. I loved hanging out with him and working with him.
It was always a pleasure. He was a great musician and horn player but
he was also much more. He was kind, intelligent, thoughtful,
curious, multi-faceted, generous and very funny. He always left a situation
having given more than he had taken. All of us who knew him will miss him a great deal.
RIP Miles.

I would like to extend my condolences to Mrs Hearn and family.
I never had the chance to meet Miles as I live in the UK. However, a friend, who went on his Nature Walks, shared his posts with me. I loved getting them and enjoyed his brilliant photographs. I appreciated his depth of knowledge and learnt such a lot about birds, particularly ducks but botany as well. I will miss the pleasure of them dropping into my inbox.
He will live on in my memory, as I am sure in the hearts of the many people whose lives he touched.

Miles took us on adventures in a city I thought I knew well and introduced so many of us to his love of birds, trees and plants -- in all seasons. I only wish I'd paid more attention to his every word, every nuanced description of buds on a branch or greenery emerging from the winter's snow. He gave us so much and has left us wanting more. A group of his TDSB Learn4Life devotees plan on continuing his schedule of walks this month to honour him. I will be blinking back tears when I lift my binoculars to my eyes and remember how generously he gave of himself to all of us. His blogs, quizzes, photography and poetry selections will be missed profoundly. He was a gentleman, an educator, a leader, a lover of nature and the music of life. He was our compass.

I first knew Miles when he was 12 and I was 16; his lesson with "Mr Rittich," in a room on the top floor of the old, ramshackle Conservatory building, was ahead of mine, and I always enjoyed chatting with his mother while listening to his lesson through the door. He led a great section in his years with the HPO, and we often saw each other after concerts. Two unforgettable performances from those years were a Brahms Trio at a McMaster lunchtime concert, dedicated to his mother shortly after she died, and an amazing Brandenburg 2 (that's right, 2) on a high F horn with the Te Deum Orchestra at Christ's Church Cathedral. We connected on Facebook after he retired, but I regret I didn't get to spend any time with him and share his love of nature. We will all miss him.

We are so sad to hear that Miles has passed. Miles was a kind and supportive friend with a cheerful personality. Since university our lives have travelled the same paths. The Hamilton Symphony, T.S.O., The New Wind Quintet, and many years with The National Ballet orchestra when we travelled with our families across Canada while performing and going for walks in nature. We named both of our first boys Alexander. Marie joined the orchestra playing the harp and Nadia was a principal dancer. What great times we shared. Dear Marie our hearts go out to you and your family.

It is with great sadness that we learned of the sudden passing of Miles. We always looked forward to the Spring walks with much anticipation.
Sharing his wealth of knowledge, he guided us to a very educational and enjoyable exposure to the flora, fauna and the beauty of nature.
His daily posts and excellent photography were always anxiously awaited.
He will be greatly missed.
Our condolences to the family.

A great great man. I remember him as quiet, confident, kind, and generous. I met him at my earliest days of being a freelance horn player, playing with him in Man of La Mancha, Crazy for You, and the Hamilton Phil. And he was so relaxed and welcoming, I couldn't possibly imagine being nervous or stressed out as a new kid on the scene. A great role model. I believe his dad was a banker, and Miles lent me his copy of "The Dow Jones Guide to Investing" - which helped me grow a whole brand new branch :) All my love and condolences to his family and friends!

I´m extremely sad, and I´m so grateful. Grateful to my wonderful mentor Miles, who rescued me from pandemic anxiety and loneliness. Who invited me to share his passion for every living thing, no matter how tiny or seemingly insignificant. Who inspired me to take up my camera again to record it all. And I´m glad that I got the chance to tell him how very much he meant to me. I miss his presence, his lovely sense of humour, and I´m sorry for anyone who didn´t have the opportunity to know him. My heart goes out to all of his family and friends, and to all my fellow nature lovers - we´re the ones who got to "walk with Miles."

I will always remember in my early choir days, Miles was playing the horn with the symphony. I was thrilled and surprised when he joined the choir as a singer. I enjoyed chatting with him, and felt he was a real inspiration. I'm so sorry he had to leave us, but he led a full life!!! <3

I started the bird walks in the fall of 2021. I was newly retired and they were the highlight of my week. I learned so much and got introduced to new parks and other avid birders. He was a very special gentleman, thanks for everything Miles, you made our world so much brighter.

I first met Miles in grade 10 music class. We both played in the school orchestra throughout high school. I remember our grade 11 music exam where Miles's solo piece on the French horn was a movement from a Mozart horn concerto. It was beautiful. He was an amazing musician.
He was a gentle, kind man with a wonderful sense of humour.
Please accept our sincere condolences. We will miss him.

I knew Miles for over 20 years. He and I would often exchange greetings and goings on about our families. He was a kind and gentle man. I am thankful for knowing him and counting him as my friend. May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow. I will end my note with how Miles often ended his notes to me. Go Leafs!
