MITCHELL HALPERIN Obituary

(May 18, 1937 – November 5, 2025) With deep love and profound sadness, the family of Dr. Mitchell "Mitch" Lewis Halperin announce his passing on November 5, 2025, surrounded by family. Born in Montreal to Fannie (née Jacobs) and Hyman Mordechai Halperin. Mitch grew up in Montreal alongside his predeceased siblings, Ruth (Art Leznoff) and Alex (Carol, who still leads the California Halperins). He was devoted to his wife, Brenda (née Geller), with whom he shared an extraordinary partnership for 69 years. Together they built a life defined by love, generosity, and unwavering commitment to family. Mitch was a devoted father to Aileen (Anthony Kozdas), Frank (Linda O'Neill), and Ross (Dani Sarbit). He was a cherished grandfather to Madison (Mario Vertolli), Emileigh, Mackenzie, and Bronson Kozdas; Laura (Spencer Naito) and Heather Halperin; and Ava, Talia, and the late Zane Halperin. Professionally, his impact was immense. As Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto, he served at St. Michael's Hospital as a world-renowned nephrologist, researcher, author, and educator. His gift for simplifying complex physiology to first principles helped others to "see the big picture" and shape generations of physicians around the world. His ground-breaking work was recognized by colleagues and peers with numerous papers, awards, honorary international doctorates, and the Order of Canada. First and foremost a family man, Mitch was ever-present, supportive, and unfailingly generous with his time. He found great joy at "Skoots," the family cottage, where friends and family were always welcome. Mitch's life was one of curiosity and kindness. His influence will endure through the many lives he touched as a physician, teacher, mentor, coach, husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered. A Celebration of Mitch's life will take place on Sunday, November 30th, 3:30 p.m., at Steeles Memorial Chapel, with an open house at the family home on Saturday, November 29th, 1–5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Michael's Hospital Foundation [stmichaelsfoundation.com] or the Zane Halperin Legacy Fund [livelikezane.com].

I will forever remember being an Internal Medicine resident at St Mike's and attending Dr. Halpern's "Electrolyte Rounds" . Out of one or two lab values he would deduce such incredible information on a patient. All with humility and grace. I owe him a debt of gratitude for my education as a physician. Condolences to his family.

Many wonderful memories, including taking me along for a ski day in Banff when I was 13 when my father was tied up at a conference, to the transformative summer research experience in Mitch's lab in 1988 that convinced me to become a nephrologist. Sending my love to Brenda and family.

One of the reasons I loved my training at St. Michael's Hospital was Dr. Halperin's logical approach to medical diagnosis based on limited information. He was a kind instructor, always willing to help pull a difficult picture together into a coherent logical diagnosis. My two years training in medicine at SMH were wonderful, not least due to Dr. Halperin. Fifty years is a long time to retain such vivid memories. My condolences go out to his family and loved ones...he made so many of us better physicians.
