Monique NEMNI Obituary

MONIQUE NEMNI March 27, 1936- November 2, 2022 While on a long-awaited Mediterranean cruise with her beloved spouse of almost 70 years, Monique suffered a heart attack and died in Naples, Italy. She was a vibrant, intelligent and likeable woman who will be missed by all who had the pleasure to know her. She is survived by her husband, Max, who is missing half of his heart now, as well as her daughters, Colette (Jack), Jacqueline (Greg); her five grandchildren, Julien (Stephanie), Rachel (Navin), Nicolas (Sara), Zoe and Mark (Natalie); and her three great-grandchildren, Olivia, Henry and Sydney. Teaching was her passion and she covered all levels of education from grade one to Ph.D. She was beloved by all her students. In the early nineties, she and Max became co-editors of Cité libre magazine. There, they befriended Pierre Trudeau and later co-wrote 2 biographies, which were very successful and won awards. Monique was a very proud Canadian, that she often described as the best country in the world. She continued to stay active, mentally and physically, up until the very end. She loved playing bridge with her neighbours in Toronto and in Longboat Key, Florida, was an avid pickleball player and a formidable word game enthusiast, doing the Wordle until the day she died. We will miss her sense of humour, her intellect and her playfulness. A celebration of life will be held at Turner and Porter Funeral Home, 2180 Hurontario St, Mississauga, January 8, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Please don't wear black! Monique loved wearing bright colours. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Amnesty International or Médecins Sans Frontières.

Fondly remembered by a Glendon student. When I was offered a job in France the summer of 1971 she steered me away from the archeological dig in the south indicating it would likely be no more than ditch digging in the heat and suggested triage in the PTT in Paris for which I will be eternally grateful.

Monique Nemni and Max Nemni are our dearest friends and Colleagues and I would like to share here with Max and the whole family our immense sadness for Monique´s departure. She was a fantastic person: joyful, devoted to the family, successful academic, faithful friend, active citizen, wonderful human being and as such she always will be remembered fondly.

I am saddened to learn of Monique Nemni's passing. I was in her French class at Glendon College (York University) in 1973-1974. To her family, I extend my condolences in this difficult time.
