Murray BROOKER Obituary



BROOKER, Murray H.
It is with great sadness that the family of Dr. Murray H. Brooker announce his passing away, May 3, 2000 at the Health Science Centre, St. John's Nfld. Murray, born August 12, 1941, graduated from Malvern Collegiate in 1960, and University of Toronto in 1963. He taught at David and Mary Thompson High School before enrolling in a doctorate programme at University of Waterloo in 1965. Dr. Brooker was an internationally recognized research scientist and a caring and dedicated teacher. He was awarded the Dean of Science Distinguished Scholar Medal (1994) and was the recipient of the National Union Carbide Award (2000) for contributions to Chemistry Education in Canada. Murray organized the Canadian Institute of Chemistry Conference in St. John's in 1996, and was district coordinator of the CIC High school exams in Newfoundland for the last 20 years. Greatly loved by his family, Murray will be deeply missed by his wife Gwen, their children and grandchildren: Murray & Barbara, their children Andrew and Meaghan of St. John's Jenny & Peter Ross, their children Sarah, Alexander, and Michael of St. Andrews, NB; Catherine & Ron Driscoll and their new daughter Ashley of Nepean, ON; and youngest daughter Kristina. Predeceased by his father Walter Brooker, he is remembered fondly by his mother Margaret Brooker, Toronto; his mother-in-law Ruth Thoms, Oshawa; three sisters, and two brothers: Margaret (Bill) Gebhard, Greenwich, England; Judy (Mike) Copeland, Toronto; Karen Blakeley, Toronto; Walter (Sarah), Toronto; and Douglas, London, England. His students and colleagues in Chemistry as well as his Hockey Buddies will also miss him. A Chapel service was held on Saturday, May 6, 2000. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Murray H. Brooker Scholarship Fund for Excellence in Chemistry.
