Murray CHUSID Obituary
CHUSID, Murray H.
BA, LLB, QC
'Do not go gentle into that good
night. Rage, rage against the
dying of the light.'
Murray Chusid lived his life and
faced his death with courage,
strength, wisdom and
determination. He was born in
Toronto in 1929 to Pearl and
Joseph Chusid, Jewish-Russian
immigrants who valued
education. He had other talents -
soloist at synagogue, silver
medalist at the Kiwanis Musical
Festival, radio singer. When his
voice changed he became the
star in the Harbord Collegiate
Gilbert and Sullivan operettas -
adding his own sense of
humour. At UofT, he acted in the
Hart House dramas, at Osgoode
Hall he won the gavel for
debating. Always interested in
politics, he was elected
councellor, then Alderman for
North York and the Metro
Council. After retirement from
politics, he represented clients in
land use law and many buildings
in Toronto benefited from his
advice. He sat in many
committees and was founding
President of the Toronto Centre
for the Arts. But the joy of his life
was his family.
He held them close and passed
on his values. Nita, his wife of 62
years, his children, Deborah and
Frank Fisher, Robert and Bonnie
Chusid, Elliott Chusid and Wendy
Freeman. His grandchildren,
Benjamin and Aly Fisher, Hayley
and Jeff Rochwerg, Sasha Fisher
and Joshua Fisher, Jamie, Corey,
Candice, Joseph and Annie, and
great-grandson, Jakob Fisher
The fondest memories were
with his family at the lake
Simcoe Cottage, trips to Florida
and cruising the oceans.
We thank the wonderful care he
received at Princess Margaret
Hospital from Dr. Monika
Krzyzanowska and the Doctors
and staff and the Sunnybrook
Hospital ICU, the Bridgepoint
Health Centre the CCAC nurses
and Doctors. He will be greatly
missed. Funeral Services at
Benjamin's Memorial Chapel,
Thursday, August 18th at
11:30am.
