MURRAY SHORE Obituary

Murray Hugh Shore, devoted husband, beloved father and grandfather, and sterling criminal defence advocate, died peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, in Toronto on the morning of April 22, 2025. Murray was born to Percy and Rosalie (née Alex) on July 24, 1951, in Ottawa, and was raised in its close-knit Jewish community. He first came to Toronto to attend undergraduate studies at U of T and, following his call to the Bar in 1977, practiced criminal law at all levels of court there and throughout Ontario for more than four decades. A most agreeable man who disagreed for a living, Murray enjoyed a reputation for integrity throughout his career that is almost impossible to overstate. Beloved for his courtesy, sincerity and decency by Crown counsel, court staff and colleagues alike; and by the generations of lawyers he mentored; and by the hundreds of men and women for whom he won a second chance at life, it is entirely possible that not a single unkind word about Murray Shore was ever spoken in his 43 years of practice. Murray is mourned and will be remembered by his cherished wife and soulmate of 25 years, Andree (née Ryckman); by his devoted brother, Jody and sister-in-law, Dianne; by his beloved children, Robert, Kevin and Annie Shore, and their mother, Debra Aronson; by his stepsons, Lucas and Gabriel Rebick; by his sons- and daughters-in-law, Genevieve Tomney, Danielle Rodin, Leon Mintz, Sheila Heti and Amina Abdeldaim; and by his adored and adoring grandchildren, Bennett, Maisie, Adeline, Sadie, Noga, Kedem, Sophie, Grace and Ada. Murray loved the law and the courtroom; and telling stories and hearing jokes; and travel, and good food, and fine wine; and Keith Jarrett; and a well-cut suit of clothes; and deli sandwiches, and Prince Edward Island, and English cocker spaniels; and, above all, his family and friends, so many of whom were with him at his bedside these last few months. He was the kindest of men, and enriched the lives of everyone he touched. We will always love him. Funeral to be held at Benjamin's Park Memorial Chapel, 2401 Steeles Avenue West, at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, April 25, 2025. Memorial donations may be made to the Farley Foundation (www.farleyfoundation.org, 1.888.262.9811, ext. 1).

I first met Murray in Ottawa in about 1978 when in the first year of a more than 40 year law partnership with his cousin, Leonard Shore. Over the years, prior to my retirement in 2013, Murray would often visit Leonard while in Ottawa on a case which provided me with numerous opportunities to spend time with him, often over a meal or in court. More important than the fact that he was a superb lawyer, is that he was, pure and simple, an incredibly nice person, someone I was always happy to see enter the front door of our office. I have thought of him often since hearing of his passing. You are missed Murray. Have a safe journey.

A most agreeable man, we are sorry we did not have more opportunity to enjoy his company these last few years. What a loss to those left behind.

Murray was a beloved classmate of Queens Law 75. We will celebrate our time with him at school (and during the years after graduation for those lucky to practice in his sphere) at our 50th reunion in Kingston this September. Condolences to his family, colleagues, and friends.
