Myer HOROWITZ Obituary

MYER HOROWITZ, OC Myer Horowitz died peacefully on October 24, 2022, in Victoria, British Columbia, at the age of 89. The third child of Fanny and Philip Horowitz, Myer was born in Montreal. He attended the School for Teachers at McDonald College (now part of McGill University). He began his career in 1952 as an elementary school teacher in Montreal and felt that his time teaching at Victoria School was the highlight of his long career in education. Myer attended night school at Sir George Williams College (now Concordia University) graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 1956, the same year he married Barbara Rosen, also of Montreal. Myer went on to earn his master's degree from the University of Alberta in 1959 and his doctorate from Stanford University in 1965. Myer was on faculty at McGill from 1960 until 1969 when he and Barbara and their two daughters moved to Edmonton where he held numerous positions at the University of Alberta, ultimately serving as president from 1979 to 1989. Following his retirement, Myer and Barbara moved to Victoria in 1998 where Myer became associated with Royal Roads University and the University of Victoria. Always passionate about education, Myer continued mentoring students and advising and consulting on various committees until the day he died. Myer was predeceased by his parents, and his brothers, Sol and Isadore. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; his daughters, Carol and Deborah; and by his sister, Ida (Gold); as well as his sisters-in- law, Lillian and Jean; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Dr. Christine Roh and the nurses of the Vancouver Island Health Authority who were so attentive to Myer over the last several months. According to his wishes, a small graveside funeral was held in Victoria.

The latest issue of Concordia magazine arrived this week and it was only in reading this issue that my mother, Doreen Jenkins (who served as Secretary to the VP Facilities and Services at the University of Alberta for 17 years commencing in 1979) noticed the notice regarding Dr Horowitz´s passing. I too worked at the UofA in the Office of the Registrar during Dr Horowitz´s tenure as President. We have many fond memories of him. His thoughtful, kind and considerate demeanour and his sense of humour added greatly to his every endeavour. Our deepest sympathies to the family.

I didn't know Myer Horowitz but I was a student of his wife, then Barbara Rosen. Miss Rosen was my grade 6 teacher at Nesbitt School in Montreal nearly 70 years ago. It was so long ago that it's doubtful that she would remember me at this point. But she was my favourite school teacher and I would like to send my sincere condolences to her and to her family. From all that I have read about Myer, they have lost a remarkable person.

Mayer was a remarkable teacher and leader of educational administrators throughout Canada. He inspired me and my twin brother Bill and maintained contact and interest in our careers as educational administrators, Bill as Vice President of Algonquin College in Ottawa and I as a Director General of the Sir Wilfred Laurier School Board in Montreal. He was an administrator who knew that teaching was both an Art and a Science. He understood learning disabilities before most of his peers. He made a difference. My sympathies to his wife and daughters of whom he was very proud.
Scott Conrod retired DG of Laurenval and Sir Wilfred Laurier School Boards and Professor of Educational Psychology at McGill University for 23 years in retirement.

We were so sorry to hear of Myer´s passing. We were related through Barbara, who is a second cousin. We live in the U.K., so have only been able to meet up only on rare occasions. Myer was always warm and charming and a pleasure to be with. We are sure that all who knew him will miss him. May his dear soul rest in everlasting peace. Love to Barbara, Debbie and Carol, from Gina and Malcolm xxx

I had the pleasure and honour of working at the U of A during Dr. Horowitz´s tenure at the U of A and there are endless stories from students, faculty and staff of his kindness, concern and efforts in every facet of his responsibilities as the President . He showed a special Interest in International students making every effort to create a welcoming environment and assure their success. Students from around the world will remember him with love and gratitude. There are endless examples of his contributions but in the end the conclusion would always be that he was kind, honest, concerned and a visionary leader. My deepest sympathy to Barbara and his daughters.

I have known several men who deserve the title of
gentleman. And a few whom I would describe as scholars.
But few who are deserving of both those accolades.
Myer was one of those rare individuals who could
accurately be described as a gentleman and a scholar.

He was a true friend and I shall miss him in the years to
come.

A truly great man and a thread that passed through my life. I grew up in Montreal, where he taught one of my sisters at McGill. Then I moved to Edmonton where I worked in radio news and interviewed him quite frequently during his tenure at U of A. He expressed his thoughts in such a cogent, calm manner; a joy to talk to. Finally I ended up at UVic and watched his mentorship in action. He touched so many lives on his journey.
