I thought I would share a favourite picture of Bruce, Doc John Barker (on the right) and myself at St Stephen´s in 2004. Both amazing gentlemen. Both inspiring in their talents and consideration for others.

This is true for so many, but I have to say Bruce had a huge impact on my life. More specifically, his sermons had a huge impact. Each Sunday, Bruce wove a fascinating tapestry of references to things political (I think back to M.L. King), artistic (Kurelek), theatrical (Plummer), musical (The Beatles), literary (Berton), cultural (Gunsmoke), social (Schweitzer), theological (Kierkegaard), philosophical (More) and of course scriptural (Luke 10:29-37).

Bruce had a guaranteed rapt audience each week-of all ages. In my case (age 14 as he ended his time as minister at St Stephen´s), those sermons generated a kind of Christian (ultimately secular) humanism, leading to a career of good (and some lost!) causes. He would not want to take credit for any adventures and misadventures I encountered down that path, but in my mind the impetus to engage the world with good conscience can definitely be traced back to Bruce´s convincing oratory and engaging spirit.

PS: Many will remember Bruce´s analogy to dragonflies (I think it was) which leave their lives as nymphs in Life´s pond to fly away in Heaven-the point being that it is hard for those who have left to let those left behind know that all is good `up above´. I picture that moment now for Bruce as we bid `so long´ to our trusted friend and most amiable Demosthenes!
