NAEEM MERCHANT Obituary

(August 11, 1963 – February 22, 2026) It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Naeem Merchant, who was taken too early on February 22, 2026, in Calgary, Alberta, at the age of 62. Naeem lived a life defined by generosity of spirit, kindness, intellectual engagement, and deep devotion to his family and community. In the days since his passing, an outpouring of love and condolences have come from friends, colleagues, former students, and loved ones from around the world, a testament to the profound impact he had on so many lives. Naeem possessed a lifelong thirst for knowledge. He read widely, asked critical questions, and diligently pursued philosophical and spiritual inquiry. His love of photography and music were guiding lights in his life. Naeem was also a natural teacher, instinctively shaping and guiding others, whether mentoring students, discussing ideas with colleagues, or nurturing curiosity in his loved ones. Naeem's unique gift was his ability to inspire everyone around him to be the best versions of themselves they could be. His stories were captivating, entertaining, and always left listeners feeling more enlightened by his guidance. Born on August 11, 1963, Naeem spent his early childhood in Mbale and Kampala before the 1972 expulsion of Ugandan Asians under Idi Amin forced his family to relocate to Canada as refugees. From those beginnings alongside his mother, father, and sister, he built a distinguished career in medicine, earning his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Western Ontario in 1990. After completing his residency at the University of Toronto, Naeem pursued advanced fellowship training in Cardiovascular Imaging at Stanford University, laying the foundation for a career at the forefront of cardiac radiology, ultimately bringing cardiac MRI to Canada. For many years, Naeem worked at Toronto General Hospital, where he played a central role in advancing cardiovascular imaging and mentoring clinical fellows from around the world. He was deeply committed to the education of young professionals, leading the training of students and junior colleagues with care and rigour. In 2002, he was recognized as the Young Radiologist of the Year for Canada. Although he was immensely talented, he nudged others into the limelight so that they could grow, rather than seeking credit for accomplishments. All of Naeem's trainees and colleagues express being touched by his gracious and humble demeanour, devotion, and insatiable inquisitiveness. In 2008, he moved to Calgary, where he practiced as a radiologist, served as a Clinical Professor at the University of Calgary, and continued to publish and teach. He shaped not only the field of medicine but generations of physicians who carry forward his standards of excellence and integrity. He always made time to discuss students' aspirations and help others. Medicine, for Naeem, was both science and service. He was known not only for his expertise but for his humility, insight, and dedication to patient-centred care. Generous with his time and thoughtful in his counsel, he approached both his work and his relationships with steadiness and compassion. He conducted himself with unwavering moral courage, even in the most challenging of circumstances. Above all, Naeem was a devoted husband to Laurie for 24 years; and a loving, deeply proud father to Adam and Hannah Merchant. His family was his centre, and they spent many years enjoying trips together. He met Laurie on the golf course, beginning a lifelong partnership both on and off the fairway. He was her soulmate and best friend. An avid golfer, he shared this passion with Laurie for decades; a reflection of the companionship, joy, and mutual respect that defined their marriage. Naeem was an incredibly accomplished athlete, and the outdoors was his passion. He is lovingly remembered by his wife and children; mother, Zarina Merchant; sister, Sameena Merchant; brother-in-law, Shamez Kotadia; niece, Ziyana Kotadia; and nephew, Mikal Kotadia. He was predeceased by his father, Mohamed Ali Merchant; and his uncle, Amin Adatia. Those who loved him will remember his thoughtfulness, steadiness, warmth, and wisdom. His absence leaves an immense void in the lives of those who knew him. He was taken from us too soon and will be forever missed. A private ceremony for the family will take place on March 1, 2026. Condolences may be forwarded to the family by visiting www.edenbrookcemetery.ca. The Celebration of Life for Dr. Naeem Merchant will be held at 2 p.m. on March 8, 2026, at the Eden Brook Funeral Home and Cemetery, with a reception to follow at the Pinebrook Golf Club. Donations can be made to Doctors Without Borders in Naeem's name. Condolences may be forwarded to the family by visiting www.edenbrookcemetery.ca.

Deepest condolences to the Merchant family.
I was a research fellow in Calgary when I met Naeem. He was an exceptional human being, an expert's expert in his field of cardiac imaging. He taught me a lot about cardiac MRI. What I will never forget is his kindness and his unwavering support for trainees. He was a man who looked out for others around him in a selfless way. His legacy shall prevail. Thank you, Naeem, for everything. Deepest condolences to Laurie, Adam, Hannah and the family.

We first met Naeem as a young man when invited to his parents´ home in London ON. He had just finished playing tennis with London Lifers. Naeem was often sought out as a worthy opponent even as a young university student. During that initial visit, we found he and his sister were mature beyond their years, exuding hospitality, warmth and a genuine interest in our lives. We knew we had met a very special family. Over the years we continued to visit his parents in Calgary with his mother, inviting her entire clan as well as our son over for Indian feasts. Naim continued his traits of empathy, caring, and interest in whatever you had to say. He also was a great storyteller. We know that Naeem is renowned in the field of cardiac medicine, but to us, he will be remembered as a wonderful family man who brought joy to those around him.
Wishing peace and comfort to all the Merchant family,
Mary & Wally Hutchings and family

Dear Family of Naeem,

Please accept my sincere and heartfelt condolences on the very sad and untimely passing of Naeem. While I did not know Naeem well, I had the privilege of meeting him on a few occasions in the early nineties through my then wife and Naeem´s second cousin, Humaira Cassam, and I was struck then by his intelligence, curiosity, humility, kindness, decency and compassion. I know that he was a highly accomplished physician and I was not at all surprised to read that he was also a remarkable husband and father. To Zarina Aunty and Sameena, I express my deepest condolences and I offer my fervent prayers that the departed soul rest in eternal peace, Amen. May Naeem´s memory always be a blessing and may you all be comforted by that memory at this difficult time.

With sympathy and prayers,

We feel ever so fortunate to have know such a great man.
Naeem was truly always the kindest person in the room. He certainly had a way of making you feel very special in his presence.
I´ve known Naeem and his family since university. Whenever you saw Naeem, he had a basketball under his arm; always professing `If I were a foot taller I´d be in the NBA´
Whenever Naeem started a story you knew it would be memorable. His words put together mesmerized you and he always had your full attention as he dragged his story out.
God Bless this gentle man who was robbed from his family and loved ones way way too young.
The old adage of `only the good die young´ never rang truer.
Naeem your essence will live on in your children.
Laurie, our hearts break for you. The two of you had a love that was so admirable. We all know he loved his family dearly and strongly.

Rest well my dear friend Naeem. Until we meet again ...
