Nancy BYERS Obituary

NANCY LEONARD BYERS October 13, 1924 January 15, 2024 The family of Nancy Leonard Byers announce with sadness her passing on January 15, 2024, at the Briton House, Toronto. She lived her 99 years fully and happily. Nan (as she was affectionately known by family and friends) was the eldest child of Hazel Louise Leonard of Napanee and Ellis Stephen "Ted" Byers of Chatham. She was born in Gananoque, Ontario, where she relished the 1000 Islands until departing for Trinity College. Her subsequent working years included a precious year in London, England, and various other positions back in Toronto before she undertook to work for a Library degree. This move led happily to the study of children's library work, and eventually to her final library position as Head of the Dufferin - St. Clair Library. Besides many happy holidays at the cottage in Gananoque, Nan enjoyed trips across Canada and to Europe. Through these many years she was a devoted member of the Church of St. Peter and St. Simon-the-Apostle in Toronto. Nan was predeceased by her parents and her brother, David. She is survived and fondly remembered by her sister, Barbara; sister-in-law, Mary (Gill) Byers; and family members, Ted and Dorothy Byers, Rick and Margot Byers; Diana and Mike Coen; Chris and Julie Byers; Todd, Miranda, William and Andrew Byers; Imogen, Jing, Maddie, Elliot and Llewelyn Yao; Philip Byers and Veronica Yao; Adrian Byers and Teresa Silva- Byers; Peter Byers; Cameron Byers; Gillian Coen and Emily Comeau; Alex Coen; Bridget Byers; and Libby Byers. A memorial service and reception will be held on Wednesday, February 14th at 11:00 a.m. at Morley Bedford, 159 Eglinton Ave. West.

Ms Byers hired me for my first job as a page at the Dufferin/St. Clair Library in 1983 when I was 14. My mother and I were just leaving thru our copy of St. Clair West in Pictures when I decided to Google her name. So sorry to hear of her passing...she was a lovely person. May she rest in peace.

In loving memory of a wonderful person. We will love you and miss you always. Our family cherished our visits to the St. Clair / Dufferin library. Nancy always chose appropriate books for all my children. St. Clare School enjoyed a wonderful relationship with the library when Nancy was there. Nancy contributed greatly to our community through the JJPiccininni Community Centre. Miss Buyers also co authored a book depicting St. Clair West in Pictures.
May God Bless You Nancy. Rest in peace
