NANCY MALLETT Obituary

Nancy Elizabeth Mallett, educator, archivist, world traveller and storyteller, died peacefully, on March 3, 2026, at the age of 96, with family and friends by her side. Born in Toronto to George Stuart Mallett and Anna Margery Mallett (nee Doran), she will be dearly missed by her younger brother, Fred (Kathie); nieces and nephews, Sandra (Paul), Ted (Rosie), David (Kate), Andy (Anne), John (Carol), Marcia (Nezam), and Barbara (James); her 14 grandnieces and nephews, six great-grandnieces and nephews; her goddaughter, Daryl Harding; dear friend, David Grant; along with extended family and friends. Nancy was predeceased by her sister and brother-in-law, Joan and Allan McNabb; her niece, Janice McNabb; and by her honourary brother, Chris Bryan-Brown (survived by Susan). Nancy led a full life and was a force in everything she did. She was a naturally curious woman with an exceptional memory and a gift for connecting people and nurturing meaningful relationships. She was a volunteer extraordinaire, earning the Governor General's Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers. She spent most of her teaching career in the Toronto inner-city, pioneering child welfare and development-based programs with a particular expertise in playgrounds, all in addition to her regular duties. Always an educator, in retirement she taught and lectured internationally and later volunteered her time to the St. James Cathedral archives, which carries her name, devising many memorable exhibits to share its rich trove of historical data with the broader community. A funeral will take place at St. James Cathedral on March 14th, at 2 p.m., with visitation beginning at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of choice. Those unable to attend can view via livestreaming through the Cathedral's YouTube channel

I cherish the memories I have of Nancy, how she made things happen. It was a privilege to work alongside her for 13 years at our beloved Cathedral Church of St. James. Nancy how we will miss you, God rest you and keep you.

Nancy may be resting in peace, but i suspect there is a bit of joyful chaos going on in Heaven since her arrival. Although I don't recall our first meeting I have known her since I was a baby - 70 years. She taught school and shared an apartment with my mother in Sudbury and stood as a bridesmaid at my parents' wedding. As a child and teen I remember her visiting us often in the summers at our camp on Windy Lake. I would visit with her in Toronto when I boarded at Upper Canada College. She and my mother were life long friends and travel partners on many adventurous trips. Her picture shows, and others have remarked on her beaming smile. I also remember her laugh - more of a loud, lusty and unreserved guffaw. I last spoke with her late last year, and as always it was a long and thoroughly enjoyable chat. She was a remarkable human being. I pray God's peace will comfort family and friends as we both grieve her passing and celebrate her life.

Hard to imagine Nancy´s light shining brighter, but in God´s glory and keeping, her generous loving spirit blazes. Nancy was a generous colleague and friend. It was an honour and privilege to share in ministry with her at St James. Her kindness and friendship were treasured gifts to me during my brief tenure as vicar. Extraordinary woman. Beloved child of God, rest in peace. Louise Peters

I will miss my friend of thirty years. Nancy was a wonderful and knowledgeable gardener and many of us shared delightful times on her beautiful balcony. She was an unlimited source of information on the history of Toronto and particularly the Cathedral Church of St James where she truly was a "devoted servant" for many years. Nancy is irreplaceable!
