NANCY GILMORE MORISON obituary, Victoria, BC

NANCY MORISON Obituary

(November 16, 1922 - August 10, 2025) It is with great sadness that we say farewell to Nancy Morison, a remarkable woman of style and elegance, whose taste for travel and adventure left an indelible mark on all who knew and loved her. The last surviving member of her immediate family, she is remembered with love by her nieces and nephews, as well as her dear friends in BC, where she spent more than half her life. Possessed with a proud, independent nature and generous spirit, she packed a lot of life into her 102 years. She served her country during wartime, travelled the world and enjoyed a long and varied career in private industry, business development and even had a stint with an aerial survey company mapping Canada's north. She lived in London, England, in the early 1950s, working as a corporate secretary for an advertising agency, and later with MGM Studios (UK). In 1969, she realized a dream and lived in France for a year, learning the language and absorbing the culture. Her travels took her to many countries around the world, including a trip to Antarctica with her sister-in-law, Marg Morison, when she was well into her 80s. In the early 1970s, she joined the Canada Development Corp. as head office manager and corporate secretary in the Vancouver office, where she remained for 12 years. Born in Hamilton, ON, the second of five children to Frank and Nora (Benwell) Morison. She attended Strathallan School and McMaster University. Shortly after war broke out, she joined the Canadian Women's Army Corps (CWACs), serving four years as a basic training officer, attaining the rank of Lieutenant. She was a former member of Hamilton Golf and Country Club, and later the Victoria Golf Club, where she was ladies captain and a board member. Golf was a passion, but so too was skiing. She was a member of Devil's Glen Country Club in Duntroon, ON, for several years, and eventually built a chalet there in 1969. But that adventure was short-lived; she moved to Vancouver with the CDC, retiring to Victoria in 1984. Her retirement was filled with card games, golf and more travel, albeit interrupted when she was asked to step in to help the Board of the Victoria Foundation as Executive Director, a "temporary" job that lasted eight years. She was also a member of the Oak Bay Probus Club. She cherished her friends in Oak Bay, and they her. She loved playing bridge and was a longtime manager of the Victoria Golf Club Duplicate Bridge Club. She continued to play an impressive round of golf, right up until the age of 100. Even then, she could be found on the practice tee taking a lesson to improve her game. She never married, although she came close. She always said she preferred to be on her own, more than happy just to be with her friends and books. She was a keen follower of politics and world affairs. Fiercely independent, she did not suffer fools gladly, a tough go in this day and age. Nancy was predeceased by her brothers, John Morison, Ottawa, ON, and Brian Morison, Hamilton, ON; sisters, Jane Gale, Halifax, NS, and Barney, Gaspereau, NS; sisters-in-law, Margaret (nee Holbrook) Morison and Margaret (nee Foster) Morison; brothers-in-law, Robert Gale and Andrew McLaughlin; nephews, John Morison, Hamilton, Billy Morison, Ottawa, and Tim McLaughlin, Peterborough, ON; and grandnephew, Sean Robertson, Panama City. She will be lovingly remembered by many nieces and nephews, including Kelly Robertson, Vancouver, BC, Nancy Olexiuk, Haliburton, ON, Peter Morison, Hamilton, ON, Patrick Morison, Toronto, ON, Zac Morison, Toronto, Frank Morison, Calgary, AB, Fred Morison, Hamilton, Martha Morison-O'Connor, Calgary; Gordon Morison, Burlington, ON; Amy McLaughlin, Flamborough, ON, Peter McLaughlin, Mahone Bay, NS, Richard McLaughlin, Gaspereau, NS; Jennifer Weidhaas, Granville Centre, NS, Robert Gale, Halifax, NS; as well as her sister-in-law, Karnyati Morison, Ottawa. A Celebration of Life will be held in the fall at the Tamahaac Club in Ancaster, ON.
