I found out about Ms. Wittlin's passing and have been at a loss for words ever since. I can't really put into words how much she meant to me and how greatly she's impacted my life, but I'll try. As you can see from the comments, Ms. Wittlin was a tour de force in terms of what to expect from a teacher. Who teaches grade 9s to write at a university level?! She was demanding as a teacher, and I wouldn't have had it any other way. If she hadn't been so demanding, I never would have learned to appreciate all of the arts (not just literature!) the way that I have. Whenever I read a well written book, or watch a well directed movie or show, I always think back to Ms. Wittlin. I'm pretty sure I never would have learned to appreciate art in all its forms if it wasn't for her. After reading one of those books or watching one of those shows/movies, I'd always also think "I wonder if Ms. Wittlin's seen this, I'm sure she'd love it!"...I was fortunate enough to be in contact with her in her retirement, and I'm deeply saddened by the knowledge that I'll never get to have conversations with her again about reading or film.
To the family: Ms Wittlin had a life changing impact on me, and I can only begin to imagine what she must have meant to you as well. Please know that we loved her so very much. I will miss her charm, warmth, and wit and I know that I will think of her often. She will forever live on in our memories, may she rest in peace.

Brad and I are devastated to hear of the passing of Naomi. Mrs. Wittlin was not only a wonderful human being, but a powerhouse of a teacher who touched many lives and inspired an insatiable love of learning and literature among her students. She would come to class with shopping bags filled with various works of literature, and would have us reading difficult works from around the world - on top of what was already in the curriculum. She pushed us to go further and dig deeper. She truly cared. May her memory be a blessing.

My sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Mrs. Wittlin. She was such a dedicated teacher, she didn't accept mediocrity and always pushed us further. She even created her own resource book for us which we as her students called the "English bible". I will always remember her for her colorful outfits, endless ownership of uggs galore and quizzical stare when she knew we hadn't done our readings or homework. Most importantly I will cherish her dedication to each of her students and helping us to realize we had great potential.
