October 8, 1974 – July 25, 2025 Neil passed away as he wanted, overlooking a sunny beach after an incredibly short, but courageous battle with cancer. Neil's world revolved around his wife, Etsuko (née Teramae), and his daughter, Neko. Much loved son of George (Pam) and the late Janis MacNeill. He will be incredibly missed by his sister, Carolyn; and brother-in-law, Colin Mowatt; his mother-in-law, Yoshiko Teramae; and his many cousins scattered across Canada, the U.S., and the Caribbean. Neil was "Uncle Wheeler" to Sam and Henry Kinzie-Mowatt, who will miss his "true but fictional" Uncle Wheeler stories. Neil maintained long-time friendships with classmates from Unionville High, Carlton University, and Humber College. Warm thanks to those who were with him during his illness. Neil loved remote beaches in warm places, music, IPAs, and insanely spicy chicken wings. He could often be found cycling with Neko to Leslie Spit, looking for sea glass and eroded bricks from Toronto's early days. His beautiful garden was his sanctuary and happy place. Neil always put grieving families first, giving thoughtful and compassionate care as a funeral director. He was very excited about his new role at Ontario Health as a Tissue Recovery Coordinator, which provided more opportunities to help people. He was fiercely loyal and not a fan of change. His favourite roles were being "fun Dad" to Neko; and loving husband to Etsuko. The family wishes to thank the incredible staff at Mt. Sinai Hospital and his friends and his colleagues at Chapel Ridge for their thoughtful and empathetic care. Friends may call at Chapel Ridge Funeral Home, 8911 Woodbine Ave., Markham (
https://chapelridgefh.com/), from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m., prior to the service at 1:00 p.m., on August 6. A reception to follow at the funeral home, where we will toast, and perhaps roast, Neil, as he would want us to do. The family would appreciate donations in Neil's honour to
Canadian Cancer Society.
