Neil Wood Obituary

NEIL CAMERON WALKER WOOD June 27, 1930 - August 8, 2021 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Neil Cameron Walker Wood of Georgetown, Ontario on August 8, 2021 in Halifax, Nova Scotia surrounded by his loving family. Neil was born on June 27, 1930 in Leeds, Yorkshire, UK, to Dr. James and Minnie Walker Wood. He grew up in Yorkshire and attended school in York. He completed his National Service in Edinburgh and studied engineering at the University of Edinburgh. In 1952 he immigrated to Canada with his first wife Joan (Addy). They lived in Alberta, British Colombia and Manitoba where he joined the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada, Reserves. In the 1970's he moved his family to Ontario. Neil started his career in the lumber business, then became an Investment Mortgage Broker and in the 1960's acquired The Fidelity Trust Company, which he built into a National Financial Institution with branches across Canada. After the sale of Fidelity Trust in the early 1980's he became involved in Commercial 'Brick and Beam' Real Estate, renovating some of the historical properties in downtown Toronto. In 2006 he established the Walker Wood Foundation, in honour of his Father, James, to provide scholarships to students in financial need pursuing Post Secondary Education. He loved his Farm in Georgetown, where he lived for many years with his family. Neil enjoyed his Winter home in St. Croix and sailing throughout the Caribbean with Sue on his beloved 'Windrush III'. He was predeceased by his sisters, Jean Mellor and Sheila Bidgood and nephew John Bidgood and his first wife Joan Hepburn. He leaves behind Sue, his loving wife of 40 years who he affectionately called 'Gorgeous'; sons Stuart (Carmen) and Charles (Gillian); daughters Jane (Paul) and Kate (Enrique); grandchildren Christopher (Lindsay), James (Daniela), Alexander (Monica), Caitlin (Ren), Scott (Meaghan), Craig (Shannon), Eva and Lucas; 11 great-grandchildren and his emotional support dog 'Max'. Neil had a wonderful sense of humour and always had a good story to tell about his many adventures, especially over dinner and a 'scotch and soda'. He lived life with a great passion and excelled at many self taught hobbies including piano playing, wood working, architecture, sailing and was extremely talented in whatever he pursued. Our thanks and appreciation to all of the Staff at Parklands at the Gardens and Shannex Care at Home. In lieu of flowers, a donation to Broad Reach Foundation for Youth Leaders or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
