Nelson ACHONU Obituary

NELSON NWOSU ACHONU It is with great sadness that the family of Nelson Nwosu Achonu announce his passing on January 24, 2022. He was born in Umuahia, Nigeria and immigrated to Canada in 1968. It was in Kingston, Ontario that he met the love of his life, Carolyn and after a whirlwind romance they married in Lansing, Michigan. A graduate of Wilfried Laurier University (B. Sc.), he had a long career as a Microbiologist in Canada and Nigeria. Nelson loved tennis, Celine Dion, good brandy, Carolyn's cooking and baking, a good party, to laugh, to tell stories, to argue a point, to ask questions he knew the answers to, to bring people together, to do things his own way, to be surrounded by friends and family. He was a fierce believer in education, hard work and family first. He was a loving husband to Carolyn Achonu (nee James) for 51 years; father to Denise (Robert), Camille (Mervyn), Jacqueline (Obidi); grandfather to Grace, Rachel, Liam, Julian, Adrienne, Chisom and Amara. He also leaves behind his brothers Isaac (Opuruiche), Uzoma (Amaechi), Uju (Antonia) and Amobi and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. All of whom will continue to honour his legacy by living their lives to the fullest. He will be sorely missed. He was predeceased by his parents, Achonu and Berniece Okaraocha, his brother Bennett and sister Florence. He was a passionate supporter and fundraiser for the Kidney Foundation of Canada and raised thousands of dollars for the Foundation through Team Nelly. Many thanks to the wonderful staff at the Dialysis and Palliative Units at Credit Valley Hospital in Mississauga, Peel Senior Link and Turtle Creek Manor Seniors Residence. In lieu of cards or flowers, donations to the Kidney Foundation or Credit Valley Hospital in Nelson's honour are appreciated. For service details please visit glenoaks.ca.

Dear Carolyn and Family:
We send our love and condolences to all of you, Nelson's much loved family.
We have known and loved Nelson for many years, and we were aware his health had been failing.
We haven't seen Nelson for a number of years, but each time I telephoned their home, he was always cheerful and grateful and he never complained although we knew going for dialysis was a struggle. Nelson was very interested in how we were and how our families were.
I remember the man who loved his family without reserve. It was difficult for him during Covid lockdowns when he could not see his children or grandchildren.
We are thankful for his life and for the miracle of a kidney transplant many years ago. We are also thankful that he is no longer suffering but is now at peace.
Our hearts go out to you, Carolyn, Denise and Robert, Camille and Mervyn and Jackie and Obidi at this painful time. Your father was extremely proud of you!
We also think of his siblings who are saddened by this loss.
We will pray for all of you as you gather to say goodbye and continue to mourn in the coming months.

Much love and peace and with great sadness,
Jean and David Aston
