SHNEIDMAN, Noah Norman
Of Toronto, Canada passed away peacefully on December 30, 2016, at the age of 92. Dr. Shneidman was a distinguished Professor Emeritus of Russian Literature at the University of Toronto and author of numerous books, which received critical acclaim, including winning the Canadian Jewish Book Award for Holocaust History in 2002. He was born in Vilnius, Poland. A Holocaust survivor, he spent the war years in the Vilnius ghetto in a resistance group fighting off the liquidation of the ghetto. He became a prominent Professor of Sports Education in the Soviet Union. He was a leading athlete in hockey and boxing and coached on the Olympic level, prior to his joining the Centre for Russian and East European Studies at the University of Toronto. He is survived by his loving family - daughters, Rose Buckley and Lil Shneidman; and his grandchildren, Jessica and Michael Hyman. He will be a shining light looking over us always. At Benjamin's Park Memorial Chapel, 2401 Steeles Avenue West (3 lights west of Dufferin) for service on Monday, January 2, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. Interment Lithuanian Farband Section of Bathurst Lawn Memorial Park.
