Noel CROXON Obituary

NOEL CROXON December 25, 1927 - October 7, 2021 The clock of life is wound but once, And no man has the power To tell just when the hands will stop At late or early hour To lose one's wealth is sad indeed To lose one's health is more To lose one's soul is such a loss That no man can restore The present only is our own So live, love, toil with a will - Place no faith in 'Tomorrow' - For the clock may then be still. At home surrounded by his family, Noel's clock stopped on October 7, 2021, two months shy of his ninety-fourth birthday. Predeceased by his wife Faith, he leaves behind his three children - Bruce (Debra), Sheilagh (Jean) and Michael (Sharon) along with his eight grandchildren, Nicolas, Natalie, Marley, Anna, Lucas, Grace, Addy and Sarah. Noel also leaves behind his first wife Norma, younger brother Leo (Carol) and was predeceased by his elder siblings Yvonne and Cranmer. He will also be remembered by a bevy of nieces and nephews, and most fondly as 'Uncle' by Zoe and Julia Paliaire. Born in Great Waldingfield England on December 25, 1927 Noel spent his youth in various locations as his family moved where his father could find work. His life in England included beginning his working career at the age of twelve delivering milk, being a projectionist in a London movie theater and being called to serve in the Royal Marines at the age of 18 in March 1946 following the end of WWII. He followed Norma to Canada aboard the RMS Ascania on March 16, 1956. Noel's life in Canada was characterized by hard work and family. His passion for both exemplifying the story of a successful Canadian Immigrant. He quickly found work in the car business becoming a Clerk at Robertson Motors on the Danforth. Despite having only a grade eight education Noel's understanding of numbers fueled his success as he was quickly promoted to Comptroller prior to joining and assisting with the opening of Alec Irvine Motors in 1963 as Secretary Treasurer. Along with long time partners Deryck Gilpin and Mel Smirle Noel bought North York Chevrolet Oldsmobile in 1968 and quickly established it as one of Canada's leading General Motors Dealerships. He later partnered with Roy Foss to open Canada's first Auto Centre in 1982. Noel was President of Toronto Dealers Association (1976), International Car Show (1977), Toronto GM Dealers Association (1982). He was recognized by General Motors Canada for 50 years as a General Motors Dealer in 2018. Noel was a proud General Motors Dealer and always appreciative of the opportunity that was offered to him. His career was exemplified by hard work, passion for people and a willingness to give back. His values live on today through The NewRoads Automotive Group. Noel was a member of the Rotary Club of North Scarborough and an avid supporter of Big Brothers and Big Sisters. He was one of a small group of people who started the Big Brothers Gourmet Dinner - an event which remains its largest source of fundraising today. He was named Big Brother of the year for metropolitan Toronto in 1985 acknowledging his relationship with little brother Jason Beaumister. He was an avid golfer having held memberships at Scarborough Golf Club, Muskoka Lakes, Thornhill and TPC Prestancia in Sarasota. A private funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 12, 2021 at 10:00 a.m., followed by burial at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. For those who wish to livestream the service, please visit www.etouch.ca. A larger Celebration of Noel's Life will be planned for spring/summer 2022. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Noel Croxon Legacy Fund, Big Brothers Big Sisters of York http://york.bigbrothersbigsisters.ca/donate/

Dear Michael,
I wish to pass on my condolences to you and your entire family on the passing of your Father. When I would visit North York Chevrolet, Noel always treated with respect and welcomed me to his business. I can't help but remember his soft English voice and demeanor when he spoke to me. Michael he was a Prince of man, and will always have my admiration.
May he rest in peace.
Your Friend, Ralph Murphy

I was deeply saddened to learn of Noel's passing. Although, in recent years, I only saw him occasionally when he dropped into our office, I look back fondly to the days when he and I were active, Noel at his car dealership and I at our accountancy office.
Noel was far more than a client of our firm. He was a classy and gracious friend and confidant to me. It was always a pleasure to be of service to him and to his business interests and I enjoyed both our professional and personal relationships to the fullest. I have fond memories of the annual Big Brother and Sister banquets and the dinners my wife and I shared with him and Faith at La Pomme De Auberge. My deepest condolences to Michael, Bruce and Sheilagh and your families. May your memories of him bring you comfort at this sad time.
Harvey Gardner.

We will miss Noel. We saw each other at a favourite restaurant in Sarasota and talked a lot. He loved it in Florida and was not ready to leave it behind. We could talk for hours. My condolences to the family. Rest in peace Noel.

Dear Bruce, Sheilagh, Michael and family,

Thank you for live streaming this service, and so allowing those of us over "in Blighty" to attend. I found it moving that many elements of the service referenced Noel's English heritage. He was certainly never forgotten this side of the pond. He always made time in what must have been a very full schedule to call my father, his cousin Barry, every so often to catch up with us in the UK. I was only a teenager when I took those calls, (the days when you called a landline, and asked to speak to the relevant household member, rather than just ringing someone's mobile,) and I think it says a lot about him that he always took the trouble to talk to me and ask how I was doing before I passed the phone onto my father.

Rest In Peace, Noel

On behalf of the McAvoy family; Pat, Carol and myself, I wish to express our sincere condolences to the Croxon family. Noel and our father, Harry, worked together over many years through North York Chev Olds. Dad held Noel in high regard and considered him a friend for whom he had great affection. Also through my work with Big Brothers of York and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada, I knew of Noel's passion for the wellbeing of children. God bless you Noel. You and the Croxon family are in our prayers. Pat, Carol and Harry.

While I never interacted with Noel in person, I did meet with Michael at North York Chev and later at New Roads. I was also very fortunate to see Noel honored for 50 years as a GM dealer at the Dealer Convention in 2018. Rare to see a 50 year honoree. Anita and I send our sympathies to the Croxon family.

Noel Croxon and I never actually met -- I knew him only through the words of his daughter, my coach and mentor Sheilagh. But it was very clear to me that he was a man who loved his family and whose family loved him. There's no higher praise than that.

Noel was a true gentleman and a compassionate man. I was always impressed that he took time out of his busy life to be a life-long mentor to a ‘little brother’. His quiet, behind the scenes actions and influence made such an impact on so many. He was an example for us all! Thank you Noel!
