Norman FETTERLEY Obituary

NORMAN GUY McCALLA FETTERLEY With great sadness we announce the death of Norman, in Ottawa on November 23, 2023, at the age of 74. Loving husband of Elizabeth. Beloved father of Jessica and Emily, and baby Amanda (deceased). Son of the late Guy Hastings and Calla Fetterley (née McCalla). Norman was a broadcaster and journalist. His education began in Chippawa, Ontario (now part of Niagara Falls), continuing at Westlane Secondary School in Niagara Falls. Early on, he took part in many successful public speaking contests. October 17, 1967, saw Norman's first broadcast at CJRN Radio in Niagara Falls. A part-time job turned into a full-time job, and a year later, he switched to CKTB Radio in St. Catharines. In 1972, he went to Thunder Bay, where a job in television beckoned at CHFD. In the next three years, he worked in Thunder Bay, Montreal (CFCF) and Toronto (CFTO). CFTO sent him to Ottawa as their Parliamentary Reporter. In 1983, he moved to CJOH TV in Ottawa in the same role until 1997. There's no doubt that Norman loved his time on the Hill. He often said that was why he stayed in broadcasting. When he left, he was made a lifetime member of the Parliamentary Press Gallery. He finished his career in local Ottawa news at CTV Ottawa. In October 2012, he marked forty-five years in broadcasting. Norman was always happy to help younger journalists with their work. He retired in 2013. His passion was his books and the printed word. His Funeral Service will be at Christ Church Cathedral, Sparks Street, Ottawa, on Saturday, December 2nd at 11:30 a.m. Condolences/Tributes/Donations Hulse, Playfair & McGarry www.hpmcgarry.ca 613-233-1143

To Elizabeth, Jessica, and Emily,

My sincerest condolences to
all of you. We were deeply saddened to
hear of Norman's passing
He was an original. A well-
dressed gem in our newsroom
He affectionately called me
"old boy," even when I was still
in my 20s.
Whenever he felt I needed to
smile, he would call me and
play a WW1 song titled "When
Tony Went Over the Top" by
Billy Murray. And it worked to
lift my spirits
Usually, after lunch, he would
often ask how the "grappa"
tasted. I always laughingly
replied, like, "crappa." These
are some examples of how
Norman endeared himself to us all.

A few years back, Norman
wanted to tell the personal
and little known story about
his father, Guy Fetterley's
involvement in the "Manhattan
Project." More recently, the full
story was brought to light in
the blockbuster film
'Oppenheimer'.
The "Mind Over Matter" video
was beautifully conceptualized
and photographed by Paul
Wing, and I was privileged to
have been the editor.
When we celebrated his 45
years in radio and TV
broadcasting back in 2012.
Norman mentioned an old
boss in radio who said, "The
aim (of a journalist) was to
write like Hemingway."
Norman replied, "If 1 could
write like Hemingway,
wouldn't be on radio."
We're fortunate he moved on to television.

Grammatist, exceptional
writer, husband, father
colleague, and friend.
We will miss you dearly,
Norman

We started as reporters together in 1970's at CFTO. Norm was transferred to Parliament Hill. He never left. For years he appeared on CTV suppertime newscasts across the country, becoming one of Canada's most important political journalists. He was a beautiful writer with a keen interest in history. I recall fondly a trip we made together to Washington DC in 1977, which became a non-stop discussion of American and Canadian politics. As a workmate Norm was always helpful and engaging. He was a joy to know. Bob Hurst.

As a cameraman, I enjoyed working with Norman. The longer the drive for a story, the more I learned about History from him, and I happen to enjoy History, so I just listened.
One time we were on Base in Petawawa & while looking for a particular address, I noticed many street names were of a General, or Colonel, Admiral, etc., and Norm was rattling off short anecdotes about each one! What a memory the man had!
He could have been a History teacher, no problem. He & Pierre Berton would have enjoyed @ other's company!

He once took the time to write a nice letter to the Station Mgr about my work on a particular story we worked on. The letter was in my desk drawer in the cameramen's room one morning . I was stunned that he would have taken the time to write such a letter of appreciation. No one had ever done that for me before.
Aside from being a true professional reporter, he was a class gentleman.

***and yes, Norman being a smoker, and as much as I can't stand the smell of cigarettes--I DID let him smoke in my van (with the window open a tad at minus-15C). I had respect for the man.

The 3 women in his life were his joy, and I offer my deepest sympathy to them today. RIP Norman!

Norm was an amazing man to have the pleasure to work with. I always found him so interesting to chat with as we both had a love of history. I will always remember him telling me about his holiday on the Queen Mary. His sense of humour made me laugh. RIP Norman Fetterley, CJOH News. Fade to black.

When I first started part of my job at CJOH was to feed Norms film pieces and the occasional on camera live pieces to Toronto for the early show. It was a very tight window close to air and it was always a scramble . Norm never missed the window and always managed to be gracious at the same time to a young working guy even when things didn´t go as planned. Sorry to hear he has passed.
