LASSAM, Norman John Errington, M.D., Ph.D., F.R.C.P.(C)
In Toronto, on Saturday, August 12th, 2000, after a courageous battle with brain cancer (glioblastoma). Beloved husband of Sylvia (Hawkes), and devoted father of Nina and Claire. Dear son of James and Livia Lassam of Simsbury, CT; brother of Karen (and Tom) Thornhill of Dover, MA; and of Loretta (and Hyman) Muss of Shelbourne, VT. Extended family includes Everett Hawkes, and Lois and Don Codling of Halifax, Nova Scotia; and Bill Hawkes of Toronto. Born in Toronto on February 2, 1953, Norman received his B.Sc. at Queen's University; Ph.D. and M.D. at McMaster University; F.R.C.P.(C) at University of Toronto; and Fellowship in Oncology and Postdoctoral studies in cancer research at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. He returned to Toronto in 1989 as a Clinician and Scientist at Sunnybrook and Women's College Health Sciences Centre and the University of Toronto. Norman devoted his career to the study and treatment of cancer, both in the laboratory and at the bedside. He was loved and respected by his friends, colleagues and patients for his compassion, humour, boundless energy and fascination with science and life. A Funeral Service will be held at FAIRLAWN HEIGHTS UNITED CHURCH (west of Yonge St.) on Wednesday at 2 o'clock. Donations, in lieu of flowers, to the Norman Lassam Familial Cancer Research Fund at Sunnybrook and Women's College Health Sciences Centre, 2075 Bayview Avenue, Toronto M4N 3M5, will be appreciated by the family.
