NORMAN MUNN Obituary
Norman John Munn, beloved husband to Sandra Evelyn Munn (Sonnie) of over 62 years, passed away peacefully, on August 15, 2025. Norm was the only child of Norman and Isabel Munn; and the cherished nephew of Elvene Naylor. He was predeceased by Sonnie in 2023. Norm was a devoted and loving father to Andrew (Kate; Ted, Chris), Doug (Susan; Caroline, Campbell), and Scott (Jennifer; Hayden, Oliver, Abigail); and a caring brother-in-law to Walter John (Jake) Henning. Born in Winnipeg, Norm spent his early years living in various cities across Canada before his family settled in Toronto. He attended Runnymede High School, Trinity College at the University of Toronto, and graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1959, where he met Sonnie, his lifelong partner. Norm was quiet, humble, and deeply supportive, always encouraging Sonnie and their sons to pursue their dreams. She was his closest friend, and he remained steadfastly by her side. Norm built a distinguished career in tax law at Borden & Elliott (now Borden Ladner Gervais LLP), where he practiced for nearly 30 years and was awarded the Queen's Counsel designation. After retiring from law, Norm pursued his passion for investing, studying with the Canadian Society of Technical Analysts and becoming an early day trader in the 1990s and 2000s. Norm's uncle Bert Naylor introduced him to the beauty of Lake Muskoka. In 1971, Norm and Sonnie purchased a cottage nearby, where they spent over 50 joyful summers surrounded by family and friends and a variety of pets, most especially their dogs Chico, Nikki and Magic. Norm loved Muskoka deeply. He spent countless hours on the water, taking family and friends on long boat rides and teaching Sonnie, Uncle Jake, his children, and grandchildren how to waterski. He introduced his sons to sailing, encouraging them to take lessons and race. Ever resourceful, Norm maintained the cottage with whatever was at hand. At times, this included a steak knife, duct tape, or a caulking gun. One of his most cherished memories was celebrating his and Sonnie's 50th wedding anniversary at the cottage with the entire family. He especially treasured the family photo taken on the cottage steps that day which captured three generations of Munns. Through our times at the cottage, Dad taught us the importance of work ethic, perseverance, and trust. Norm was an avid reader of the Globe and Mail, and he enjoyed discussing the political and economic implications of current events. Between university, law school, and summers in Muskoka, he formed many lifelong friendships. Norm and Sonnie also wintered in Florida and travelled extensively, hosting Sonnie's bridge nights, gourmet dinners, book club and French club and frequent gatherings in both Toronto and Muskoka. Norm and Sonnie also were parishioners at Grace Church on-the-Hill for over 60 years and active in many committees. Dad will be remembered for his quiet strength and deep love for his family. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the memories he helped create. A private service will be held at Grace Church-on-the-Hill. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Grace Church.
