NORMAN SHAMIE Obituary

(1929 – 2025) Norman Shamie, age 95 of Toronto, passed away peacefully on October 16, 2025, after a brief illness. Norman was born on December 25, 1929, in Montreal to Joseph and Eva Shamie. He grew up with five brothers, Mike, Fred, George, Emile and Raymond and his sister, Gladys. Norman attended both Loyola and McGill University and was a star athlete. Most notably, his football prowess was recognized by the Montreal media who dubbed him and his best friend, Emile Chamandy, as the 'Gold Dust Twins.' He was also a talented baseball player and became a huge fan of the Expos and the Blue Jays. In October 1955, he married Adele Aziz and the two of them recently celebrated their remarkable 70th wedding anniversary. Norman is survived by his devoted and loving wife Adele, and children Stephen (Sheena MacAskill), Suzanne (Richard Goode) and Catherine. His greatest joy in life was his family which included his grandchildren Jane, Jennifer, Alison, Andrew and Elizabeth. Recently he was thrilled to become a Great 'Gidoo' to William and Emily. He took great pleasure in watching his children and grandchildren play sports and was an avid fan of their various activities. He was a keen competitor and instilled in all of us his passion for sports. He always enjoyed Adele's cooking and on occasion, if permitted, loved to indulge his sweet tooth. Norman had a distinguished career in the manufacturing sector and was the long-standing President of Dickies Canada until his retirement in 2000 at age 71. Norman remained active and played bridge, golf and tennis well into his 80's and especially enjoyed his many winters spent with Adele and their friends at Quail Ridge in Boynton Beach, Florida. He was a member of the Toronto Lawn Tennis Club for almost 50 years. The family will receive visitors at Humphrey Funeral Home A.W. Miles – Newbigging Chapel, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville), Toronto on Thursday, October 23 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a preferred charity of choice. Condolences may be forwarded through www.humphreymiles.com.
